What is a Facial?

A facial treatment is a great way to get your skin glowing! Facials help with acne, scars, wrinkles, fine lines, hydration & so much more! Facials bring life back into dull skin with exfoliation and cleansing combined with products and serums. The experience of a facial can be relaxing and rejuvenating. Our motto here at CNY Healing Arts in Syracuse is: Relax, refresh, and rejuvenate! A facial treatment is right up there in popularity with a massage!

Steps of a Facial in Syracuse at CNY Healing Arts

A facial will begin with the client and esthetician discussing the client’s skin and determining which products are best suited to treat the goal of the appointment.

The steps of a facial are: cleanse, exfoliation, steam, extractions, mask, massage.

Cleanse

The cleansing process will start with your face being wrapped in a warm, moist towel to open up the pores and get rid of any makeup or dirt that may be on your face from the day. A gentle cleanser will typically be massaged into the skin to make sure the skin is properly cleansed. Clean skin is best for a facial so it can soak up serums, hydration, and reduce the risk of bacteria getting into the pores. The esthetician can then tell which mask will be best for your skin seeing it clear and clean.

Exfoliation

During a signature facial, the exfoliation step is generally a scrub or gel massaged into the skin to help clear out pores before extractions. Exfoliation helps slough off dead skin cells leaving skin renewed, ready for fresh cell growth.

Steam

Steam will be used at various points during a facial treatment. It can be used during the exfoliation step to help open pores and also will be used while a mask is on the face. Both ensuring pores are open and the products can do their job!

Extractions

Extractions are that feeling that hurts so bad but feels so good. Areas like your nose and around the mouth can be very sensitive and will probably make your eyes water when blackheads or whiteheads are being extracted. The estheticians use different tools to pierce and push impurities to the surface. The steps before extractions help prepare and soften the skin to make extractions less painful.

Mask

A mask is applied specifically catered to your skin type. Different masks can help with acne, hydration, oily or dry skin. A mask is typically applied to the skin for 5-10 minutes. The esthetician will watch your skin for redness or irritation before letting you relax with steam.

Massage

While the mask is on, your esthetician will give you a soothing hand, neck, and shoulder massage. Your face has just been cleansed and is ready to glow! So sit back, relax, and enjoy pure relaxation bliss!

Final Applications?

A facial treatment will end with serums, moisturizers, and of course the number one beauty product: SUNSCREEN!

How Long Does a Facial Take?

Facial lengths all depend on the treatment itself. Typically, a signature facial following the steps above takes about one hour. Shorter facials are sometimes available but generally don’t include all the steps listed above.

More advanced, medical-grade facials vary in length.

Cost of a Facial

Signature facial costs range from around $50-$120+ with the average being around $75

At CNY Healing Arts in Syracuse, a signature facial is $90 and an express facial is $60.

Benefits of a Facial

Benefits of a facial include:

  • Deep cleansing of the skin
  • Help reduce acne
  • Bring hydration to the skin
  • Cain aide with oily or dry skin

*The signature facial can temporarily improve fine lines and wrinkles but for severe cases of skin texture, wrinkles, or acne, more medical-grade facials are better suited such as microdermabrasion, HydraFacial, chemical peels or laser treatments.

Call our Syracuse office at 315-671-5755 to schedule your waxing service today!

For everything, you need to know about waxing- see below!

Fast Facts about Waxing

  • Waxing is an alternative to shaving
  • Waxing effects last longer (3-4 weeks) than shaving
  • Benefits of waxing include: soft skin, no cuts or bruises, slow hair re-growth, generally irritation-free
  • Side Effects may include: bleeding, bumps, redness, skin irritation
  • Pain minimizes the more often waxing is done
  • Hair generally grows back thinner

What is Waxing?

Waxing is the process of removing unwanted hair from parts of the body by applying heated wax and peeling it off, including the hairs.

What are the Difference Types of Waxes?

Generally speaking, there are two different types of waxes that are used at CNY Healing Arts in  Syracuse:

  • Strip wax: Srip wax uses a strip of “paper” to pull the wax off. The wax used with strips adheres not only to the top layer of hair but to the top layer of skin as well, which causes more irritation. Redness and swelling are sometimes side effects.
  • Hard wax: Hard wax is exactly that, hard, and does not need the paper to pull it off. It can be applied to the skin and pulled off directly. It adheres only to the hair and is thus more gentle on the skin.

Regardless of the type of wax, the wax is heated and then applied to the skin with a wooden applicator. The choice to use hard or strip wax is based on personal preference. The hard wax is typically more gentle on the skin, therefore more generally used in a Brazilian or Bikini wax but can also be used on areas such as the eyebrows, face, or underarm.

How long does a Wax Last?

It typically takes 3-4 weeks for the hair to start growing back. This also depends on the person and the type of hair they have. Getting regular waxes helps hair grow back on a schedule and usually thinner.

How to Prepare for a Wax?

It is best to perform a gentle exfoliate about 2-3 days before treatment. This allows all the dead skin to be sloughed away and minimize clogged pores. A light exfoliation or use of a washcloth will do the trick. Don’t excessively exfoliate as this will irritate the skin.

For mostly all body areas, hair should be grown out to about ¼ inch long (the length of a grain of rice) or about two weeks before getting your wax. This ensures the esthetician can grasp the hair with the wax to pull out. If the hair is too short, the follicle won’t come out, and you may be left with patches.

Avoid tanning or swimming about 24 hours before your appointment.

Try to avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day of your wax. These two things can cause pores to tighten, making the experience more painful.

You can take an over the counter pain reliever before treatment, such as Ibuprofen.

Make sure any area you are looking to get waxed is not exposed to the sun or sauna for three days before treatment.

Different Types of Waxing:

Face Wax: Lip, Eyebrow, Chin, Full Face

  • Every three weeks is typically a good schedule for waxing services on your face.
  • Hair needs to be long enough for the wax to grip.
  • Never get waxed on the day of a special event. The skin around where you are getting waxed will typically be red for a few hours after treatment.

      Underarm Wax

Either the strip wax or the hard wax can be used on an underarm wax. The esthetician will start by cleansing your armpit, removing any build-up from the day. Try not to wear deoderant to your appointment. After the arm has been cleansed, the wax will be applied. If there are hairs left over, your esthetician may go in with tweezers after checking with you. This is a sensitive ara where pain might be higher.

      Aftercare:

      • Wear a top where your underarm can be easily accessible
      • Avoid tanning for a few days after your wax, as the skin will be more susceptible to sun damage.

      Arm Wax

Arm waxing is great for people who need sleek looking arms such as models or swimmers. It leaves the arms without stuble from shaving. Some people who have a lot of arm hair notice a difference in the way their clothes fit/feel with less hair. Hairless arms are more convenient for moisturizing, exfoliating, and overall skincare.

      Aftercare:

      • The skin might be more irritated or susceptible to sun damage from having less hair.
      • The skin might be over-exfoliated
      • Stubble can be awkward during the growing out phase

      Full or Half Leg Wax

Leg waxes are great for people who hate shaving every day. The longer growing period makes legs smooth and hair-free for weeks instead of only a few days. Whn you first start getting waxes, your legs will not be baby-smooth at first. The hair is conditioned to grow a certain way and time. Over time with continued leg waxing, the hair will adjust to waxing over shaving.

      Aftercare:

      • It will be more comfortable to wear baggy pants after your wax
      • Avoid exfoliating the legs for at least 3 days
      • Take a cold-warm shower, excessive heat is not good for freshly waxed legs
      • Avoid activities where you might excessively sweat

Bikini, French Bikini & Brazilian Wax

The Bikini/Brazilian wax removes hair from the pelvic region. Depending on which variation you choose determines how much hair will be removed.  With any variation, you can expect your whole lower half to be exposed. You will be in a private room with just your esthetician. They are used to this. Although it may feel uncomfortable at first, it just another service to them. This is their business, so don’t worry about exposing yourself so much! Some places offer disposable underwear, but for anything more than a bikini, you will need to be completely bottomless. Depending on the amount of hair being removed- be prepared to assist your waxer by moving into different positions or holding parts of your body.

What is the difference between a Bikini, French Bikini & Brazilian Wax?

      • Bikini: The side of the bikini line gets waxed
      • French Bikini: The sides plus in a little bit leaving hair down the center of the front
      • Brazilian: All hair is removed from front to back and everywhere in between

It typically takes 3-4 weeks for the hair to start growing back. This also depends on the person and the type of hair they have. The first time is always the worst pain wise as you don’t know what to expect. Once you get into a routine, the hairs will start to grow back in the same cycle and your body will get more used to it. Although it will never feel great, the pain should get easier with time. You can pop an ibuprofen before arrival to help minimize discomfort.

      Aftercare:

      • Exfoliate the skin every other day to ensure the dead skin does not get trapped inside the follicles; this is how ingrown hairs are created. Avoid activities where you will sweat, swim, or have sun exposure immediately after a wax. Give yourself a few hours.
      • Once all the main areas of hair are removed, your waxer may go back through with some little wax spots or a tweezer to get any leftover hairs.
      • It is best to have a wax done a few days before a big event. For example, if you are going to the beach, make sure to get the wax at least three days before. This allows your skin to heal before hitting it with sand. This also allows any redness, bumps, or irritation to go away.
      • Wearing loose clothing is always a good option as well as bringing a fresh pair of underwear- you will feel some mild soreness afterward.

      Waxing Risks & Side Effects

      • Bleeding, bumps, irritation, rash
      • Waxing will typically bleed more if a woman is on her period
      • Women will typically experience more pain if they are pregnant
      • Talk to your doctor before getting a wax if you are using:
        • Antibiotics
        • Hormone Replacement
        • Birth Control
        • Acne Medication
        • Topical Retinoids
      • You will feel mild discomfort with all waxing. Some areas will be more tolerable than others. It also depends on each individuals pain tolerance

To learn more on 3D Eyebrow Microblading, read on!

      Fast Facts:

      • Eyebrow Microblading is a semi-permanent eyebrow tattoo technique
      • Individual hair-think strokes are cut into the eyebrows by a tool with tiny needles
      • A numbing cream is applied prior to starting, pain is minimal
      • Prices range from $400-$2,000+
      • Alicia Casey is a PHIBROW certified eyebrow Microblading artist in Syracuse at CNY Healing Arts and Wellness Center

      What is Eyebrow Microblading?

Eyebrow Microblading is a semi-permanent tattooing technique using embroidery-style individual strokes to mimic the look of real hair. Microblading can enhance and perfect your brows with natural, realistic results. It uses a combination of 12-15 small needles to deposit pigment into the skin. The needles reach into the superficial layer of the skin which causes it to only be semi-permanent.

Microblading is often referred to as “feather touch” or “micro-stroking”. The procedure is done by a trained esthetician. It is performed by drawing individual hair-like looking strokes onto the eye brow with a special tool. The idea of hundreds of individual strokes is that it creates a texture to look like real eyebrow hair.  3D Eyebrow Microblading can be used on any brow line whether they are missing hair all together, are light or dark in color or just want some help filling in space. Your brow stylist will measure and customize brows to perfectly fit your face, skin tone and hair color.

Eyebrow Microblading vs. Eyebrow Tattooing vs. Eyebrow Feathering

Microblading and eyebrow tattooing differ by the tools they use. The Microblading tools allows the esthetician to do more hair-like thin lines that are not as deeply ingrained in the skin as a tattoo gun. Because the esthetician has so much control, these lines look more precise and similar to hair. The dye used in microblading is less concentrated than a tattooed eyebrow. The less concentration is what makes the treatment only semi-permanent since the body ends up metabolizing the dye eventually.

Micro feathering differs from these two treatments because it essentially just fills in the existing eye brow as opposed to creating most of the eye brow shape. Micro feathering uses the existing eyebrow hairs as a base and applies pigment around and in between. Like Microblading, an incision is made into the skin. The idea of  Micro feathered brows is for a natural, fluffy-looking brow. You must have existing hair on your brows in order for this treatment unlike Microblading where you don’t need any natural hair at all. Microblading can create an entire eyebrow for you.

How Often Should I have this Treatment Done?

Results last typically from 12-18 months depending on your skin type. Oily skin will have a shorter result time. There are various points in the process that are recommend for touch ups. These vary by location. In Syracuse, a 4-6 week touch up is included in the initial price. After that, CNY Healing Arts recommends a touch up for 6 months, 1 year and 2 years where it is a full price again after 2 years.

      What to Expect During Treatment

A consultation is typically required or sometimes mandatory before having this treatment done. The tools used should always be a one-time usage and disposed of after each client. As with any facial treatment, do your research on the business and esthetician to ensure they are licensed and certified to perform this treatment.

The initial treatment will usually last anywhere from 1.5-2 hours. After a consultation, the appointment will start with the esthetician perfectly measuring out and drawing on  the eyebrows as an outline for the shape they will create. The client will be able to see what they will look like and approve of the shape prior to beginning the official treatment. A numbing cream will be applied prior to treatment, Once the cream has kicked in, the treatment will begin.

Although eyebrow Microblading isn’t necessarily a painful treatment, you may feel mild discomfort depending on your pain tolerance. The feeling has been compared to that of eye eyebrow treading. The more skilled the brow artist, the less pain their will be as they are a master of their work!

Microblading What to Expect After + Aftercare

Taking care of Microbladed eyebrows is similar to how you would take care of a new tattoo. The eyebrows will look significantly darker and the skin surrounding them will appear red immediately following the procedure. It is important to keep the area dry (from any liquid, even sweat) for about 2 hours. After the 2 hours, you will run a cotton swab that has been sterilized over the area. This gets rid of any dye residue that may be on the face.

The skin will not be fully healed until about (7-14 days depending on your skin type)

      • Your skin will be sensitive afterwards
      • You must avoid touching, picking at and getting the area wet for up to 10 days after your appointment (yes this means even in the shower!)
      • No makeup for at least a week
        • This is because the tool cuts into the skin and over the course of a week, the pigment is still settling
      • Avoid hotness such as a sauna or an activity that causes excessive sweating until your follow-up appointment
      • Apply the healing cream given to you by your provider as directed
      • Follow any specific instructions given for aftercare
      • Your eye brows will scab over- that is normal! Do not pick at them!

      Maintenance

Depending on where you have this service done, a follow up appointment or two are usually include or recommended at a reduced price. It is recommended to get a touch up about once a year. This usually will include maintenance and adding lines to the outline of the brows.

Since you just got the PERFECT brows, taking care of them and your skin is important to keep good results. Sunscreen can be applied in order to keep them from fading.

      Side Effects of Eyebrow Microblading

      • Infection, irritation or an allergic reaction are all possible side effects
        • Make your esthetician aware of any skin conditions, medication or health concerns that could cause a complication
      • Some pain and discomfort is normal during treatment as it is a needle scraping into your skin
        • If you experience severe pain, puffiness or any form of discharge or continued redness, this could be a sign of infection
        • Women may feel a heightened sense of pain if the treatment is done while they are on their period
      • If you think you have an infection, call your doctor immediately as the brows are close to the bloodstream that reach your eyes and brain
      • People who should avoid Microblading:
        • Pregnant women
        • People prone to keloids
        • People who have had an organ transplant
        • Anyone with a compromised liver or viral condition

Eyebrows must not be in a regeneration process, meaning it must not be damaged with skin irritations such as eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, acne pimples or any damage in the eyebrow area

      Cost

Depending on the location, esthetician and what is included, price typically ranges from $400-$2,000+

      • Prices range from $150 -$300 depending on the type of HydraFacial and if anything is added on to the treatment

      What is a HydraFacial

A HydraFacial is a medical-grade facial treatment that serves to resurface and clear out skin all while hydrating it. It uses the HydraPeel Tip pen to cleanse, exfoliate, extract and hydrate by infusing serums into the pores of the facial skin.

Great for all skin types, the HydraFacial MD® Treatment is not only highly effective at improving overall skin health, but also excellent for remedying:

      • Fine Lines and Wrinkles
      • Elasticity & Firmness
      • Skin Tone Evenness & Vibrancy
      • Skin Texture
      • Hyperpigmentation/Photo Damage
      • Oily/Congested Skin
      • Enlarged Pores
      • Advanced Signs of Aging

In order to market and use the patented technology, spas must be registered and licensed by HydraFacial.

      How Does It Work

Vortex-Fusion® serum delivery system is what sets the HydraFacial MD® apart from other procedures. The multi-step treatment cleanses, evenly exfoliates and extracts to remove impurities and dead skin cells while at the same time replenishing vital nutrients including Antioxidants, Peptides and Hyaluronic Acid. Thanks to the devices’ superior delivery system, these performing ingredients can more effectively reduce the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles for results you can see and feel instantly.

      HydraFacial Benefits

Another great thing about the HydraFacial is that it has many add-ons such as lymphatic drainage. The mechanical use of lymphatic drainage will reduce puffiness and speed up the removal of toxins in the body.

Depending on the result you are looking for from your treatment, different serums can be added to reduce signs of aging, for example.

Another addition that is great for overall skin health is the red and blue LED lights that are part of the HydraFacial treatment. These lights help replenish the skin and stimulate new skin growth while calming it after vigorous exfoliation or extractions.

      What to Expect:

      During a HydraFacial

The treatment itself is done in a four-step process:

      • It will begin with removing the top dead skin cells from the skin by cleansing it.
      • Next, salicylic and glycolic acids will be pumped into the skin with the HydraFacial pen to unclog pores.
      • For extractions, the tip of the pen will vacuum away dirt and oils that cause blackheads and impurities.
      • To finish, your esthetician will use the HydraFacial pen to infuse serums into the skin to hydrate and refresh.

      Aftercare recover

We recommend not wearing makeup the same day to ensure the serums do their job and can adequately soak into the skin. Makeup can be applied the following day.

      Side Effects

There are minimal side effects. Celebrities get a HydraFacial before a big red-carpet event to have that Hollywood glowing skin.

It is possible to experience some redness after your treatment as well as irritations.

      How Often

The effects of a HydraFacial last longer than an average facial treatment. You will notice immediate results from the facial the day of your treatment. To get the most benefit from the HydraFacial is to have multiple treatments. The idea of the HydraFacial is to improve the skin’s appearance and texture over time. Typical every 4-6 weeks is a reasonable time frame to consider another treatment.

      Cost

The cost of a varies depending on location and whether you are having it done, a medical spa or dermatologist office. Prices generally range from $150-$300

How does HydraFacial differ from Microdermabrasion or a Chemical Peel

      Microdermabrasion Vs. HydraFacial

A microdermabrasion uses manual extractions while the HydraFacial uses suction to vacuum away impurities and cleanse. Downtime is less for HydraFacial, whereas Microdermabrasion is more likely to leave your skin more red or irritated. HydraFacial is also more customizable and able to infuse more hydration into the skin.

Actually, you can combine both in a single treatment!

      Chemical Peel Vs. HydraFacial

A chemical peel uses acids on the face to remove the layers of skin.

      Fast Facts About Dermaplaning

      • The basic concept of Dermaplaning is similar to shaving.
      • The sterile blade is dragged slowly across your skin, removing dead skin cells, scar tissue, peach fuzz hairs, and other debris that lays on the surface of your skin.
      • It is not a painful treatment if done correctly.
      • Benefits include softer, smoother skin, reduction of scar appearance, removal of peach fuzz hair, deep exfoliation.
      • Slight redness may appear after a treatment but will subside within a few hours.
      • Breakouts may occur.

      What is Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a safe and effective cosmetic exfoliation procedure done most often in a spa.  During a Dermaplaning treatment, a surgical scalpel is used to shave the surface of the skin in order to remove dead skin and peach fuzz.

What are the Benefits of Dermaplaning

      Dermaplaning has many benefits.

      Dermaplaning:

      • Helps provide deeper product penetration for improved skincare texture
      • Removes peach fuzz that traps dirt and oils
      • Promotes smoother skin
      • Can help with cystic acne
      • removes dead skin cells
      • Reduces the appearance of acne scars
      • Diminishes the look of fine lines
      • Works on all skin types
      • Has instant results and no downtime

      Who Can Benefit from Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning can be used for all skin type and for those with:

      Who Should Avoid Dermaplaning?

Those with acne should avoid Dermaplaning as it can cause excessive irritation. It should also be avoided for those with hirsutism.

      How Dermaplaning Works

The sterile scalpel is held at 45-degree angle and run along the skin of the face to remove any hair and dead skin cells. The procedure is not used for shaping the eyebrows, as eyebrow hair is much thicker.

It is a stand-alone procedure or can be combined with a facial or chemical peel.  It creates deeper product penetration boosting the effects of the product.  Dermaplaning makes skin look and feel smoother and will reduce the appearance of acne scars.

What to expect for Dermaplaning treatments?

      Preparing for an appointment

A consultation is always recommended before any type of medical grade facial treatment.

An acne flare up or any open wounds could restrict you from an appointment to avoid further irritation to the skin.

Be sure to discontinue use of any retinol, exfoliating serums, enzymes or facial scrubs 3-5 days prior to treatment to obtain maximum results.

Before any facial, staying out of the sun 5-7 days prior is best. If you skin is at all sunburnt, Dermaplaning will irritate the skin like shaving over a sunburn.

If you are using Botox or fillers to enhance your skin, do not schedule Dermaplaning within the same week. Due to the downtime from Botox and fillers, it tis best to leave 3-4 days in between separate services.

If you usually wax your face, schedule your wax appointment 1-2 weeks prior to your Dermaplaning treatment or 14 days afterwards.

If you use Accutane, it is advised to wait 6-12 months after completing it to receive any type of epidermal treatment.

      During The treatment

Once your aesthetic professional has cleansed your skin, they will gently run the sterile blade over the face at a 45-degree angle removing the top layer of dead skin. Dermaplaning can be applied to the whole face, but is not used for shaping the eyebrows. The esthetician will continue going over your skin as long as needed to remove debris.

What to Expect after the procedure – recovery

No downtime is needed after Dermaplaning treatment. There is a chance for redness or your skin to feel like it has been scraped but nothing that would restrict you from going on with your day to day activities. It may take a few days to notice results, but ultimately you will see a new brightness and ease in putting on makeup or lotion.

Treatment generally lasts about three weeks. One treatment can clear up three weeks’ worth of debris. Continuous Dermaplaning treatments are recommended for optimal results.

Sometimes after treatment, the skin will end up peeling slightly.  This typically only happens when there is not enough time in between treatments to let the hair’s growth cycle be completed.  This is why it is important to leave enough time between visits to get the best results.

There is no need to worry about the hair on your face getting any darker.  Since Dermaplaning only targets the vellus hair (peach fuzz), the hair will grow back the same size and color.  It is physiologically impossible for the hair to grow back thicker and dark, so no need to panic and worry.

      Risks and Side Effects

Some potential risks or side effects of Dermaplaning include:

      • Slight redness may occur for a few hours preceding treatment
      • Whiteheads may appear a day or two following
      • Infections and scars are possible but rare.
      • If done by a trained professional, you should not experience any cuts from the razor.
      • Possibility of patchy skin pigment

      How often is Dermaplaning performed

Dermaplaning is usually performed every three to four weeks.  It is good to have the skin complete its normal rejuvenation cycle, which is thirty days, before going back and having the treatment done again.  The procedure generally will remove between two to three weeks of dead skin from the facial area.

      Costs

The cost of Dermaplaning varies from an add on service around $50 up to $300+ if you esthetician suggests adding a second treatment such as a chemical peel for ultimate results. Treatment is not covered by insurance and is charged per session.

Dermaplaning at Home – is it safe?

Although the Dermaplaning tool may be purchased at some locations, it is not recommended to do at home. The treatment should be administered by trained professionals to ensure it is performed correctly. The at-home results will generally not be the same as those done at a spa.

The risk of infection and complications is more significant when done at home as well as experiencing cuts and pain.

      Fast Facts About Chemical Peels

      About

      • A Chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure used to improve the overall texture and tone of the skin by removing old, dead skin cells and producing new; like that of a baby’s skin.
      • Chemical Peels are used to treat wrinkles and fine lines, sun damage, acne scars, hyperpigmentation, melasma, blackheads, freckles and dark marks.

      Safety

      • Chemical peels must only be administered by professional aesthetic professionals.
      • It is important to follow all pre and post care to ensure optimal results.
      • Sun Screen is a must following a peel and for the whole recovery period.

      Types

      • Light peels penetrate the outer layer of skin with little to no downtime.
      • Medium peels penetrate the outer plus middle layers of skin cells with some flakiness and a 5-14 day recovery period.
      • Deep peels penetrate the deepest level of the middle layer of skin cells. In this peel you will experience swelling, a burning sensation, flakiness and about a 2-5 week recovery period.

      Benefits

A chemical peel will leave your skin feeling fresh and rejuvenated. It will help increase collagen and produce new skin cells, getting rid of the dry, flaky old surface level cells.

      Cost

The cost of chemical peels typically range from $130+ depending on the peel.

      What is a chemical peel?

A Chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment used to improve the appearance or feel of the skin. A peel exfoliates and eventually peels off leaving the skin underneath smoother, less wrinkled and less damaged. Chemical peels are an accelerated skincare treatment that turns over skin cells and clears out pores.

What does a chemical peel do?

A chemical peel is a skin treatment which is used to improve and smooth out the surface of the facial skin. A chemical solution is used to remove top layers of skin which allows the dead surface skin to peel off. The peeling process leads to new skin growth which is usually smoother, healthier and less wrinkled compared to the old skin. Chemical peels should be performed by aesthetic professionals only. Depending on individual skin type, your esthetician will determine whether you should get a light, medium or deep peel.

What does a chemical peel treat?

Chemical peels, in general, treat a variety of things including:

      • Wrinkles and fine lines
      • sun damage
      • acne scars,
      • hyperpigmentation,
      • scars,
      • melasma and uneven skin tones or redness.
      • Specifically targeted chemical peels can help aide in blackhead removal, freckles, acne, or dark marks.

      Benefits of a Chemical Peel

A chemical peel will leave your skin feeling fresh and rejuvenated. It will help increase collagen and produce new skin cells, getting rid of the dry, flaky old surface level cells.

      Types of Chemical Peels

The three types of chemical peels are light, medium and deep.

      Light/Superficial Peels:

This peel penetrates the outer layer of the skin to gently exfoliate it. A light/superficial peel improves the appearance of mild skin discoloration and rough skin as well as refreshing the face, neck or hands. The light peel requires 4-7 days to heal. Skin may be pink to red in color and may or may not flake. Gentle cleansers and moisturizers should be applied until skin heals along with daily use of sunscreen.

      Medium Peel:

Requires 5-14 days to heal. Skin may become pink to red with the possibility of swelling. Before revealing fresh skin, you will form crusts and blotches that will eventually go away. The medium peel penetrates the outer plus middle layer of the skin to remove damaged skin cells.

      Deep Peel:

This peel fully penetrates the middle layer of the skin to removed cells. In a deep peel, you will see the most flakiness and peeing of the skin during the 7-14 day recovery period. After this peel, your skin will swell and be red with throbbing or burning sensations. It is common for redness to last longer than the 2 week recovery period. Your esthetician will give you specific instructions on how to ease the discomfort with the deep chemical peel.

After all peels, gentle cleansers and moisturizers should be applied until skin heals along with daily use of sunscreen. It is best to stay completely out of the sun unti your skin heals.

How to prepare for a chemical peel

Before your treatment, a consultation is recommended with a skin care specialist. During this visit, your specialist will help you determine what the best treatment option is for your skincare needs. They’ll ask questions about your skin, analyze to see which peel will suite your skin accordingly, give you details about the peel that is best for your skin and ask about anything that could interfere with the peel, such as medications or allergies.

If you are on any prescription retinols or topicals, you will need to stop using them 5-10 days prior to your chemical peel.

To not cause a reaction, your skin must not be exposed to sun a few weeks prior to your treatment.

If you have Melasma, a pre-treatment is recommended for optimal results.

What to expect during a chemical peel?

During your chemical peel, you will feel a slight burning sensation depending on the depth of the peel. Your esthetician may put on a few layers after seeing how your skin reacts. The deeper the peel, the more you will feel. The burning sensation will subside shortly after it is neutralized. The peel will only stay on the skin for a few minutes. Your skin may feel tight while the peel is on. Your skin may become pink to red pending the depth of the peel. The feeling will be that of a sun or wind burn.

Chemical Peel After Care & Recovery Time?

After your peel, your skin may experience some flakiness within the next few days after. Try to avoid putting anything on the skin including makeup, cleanser and moisturizer the day of the chemical peel. You can apply makeup the next day but once your skin starts shedding, avoid makeup. The shedding will last anywhere from 2 to 14 days depending on the peel.

After your chemical peel, avoid all exfoliation. Treat your skin with gentle cleansers and gentle moisturizers. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated and most importantly- use sunscreen daily! Your skin will be fresh and new like that if a baby.

      Chemical Peel Risks/Safety

Possible side effects of a chemical peel include:

      • Lightening or darkening of the skin color
        • This is more common in people with darker skin tones.
      • Scarring
        • With the possibility of permanent scars
      • Infections
        • If you are someone with the herpes simplex, you make experience flare ups after a chemical peel. Fungal and bacterial infections are possible but rare.
      • Heart, liver or kidney damage.
        • Due to the phenol used. Check with your doctor prior to treatment if you think this could affect you.

Sun Burn or Sun poisoning can occur if you do not apply sunscreen following a peel.

      Chemical Peel Cost

Chemical peels range in price since they are considered a cosmetic procedure. Costs can range from $150-$3,000 depending on where you are getting it done as well as depth.

Facials: Healthy Skin = Beautiful Skin

Our skin is the largest organ we have and it serves a number of roles, from protecting us from pathogens to keeping us hydrated—it’s our first-line of defense!   Facials not only help to facilitate this role, but also leave us with healthy skin that looks fabulous!

When you visit us, a skin care specialist will determine the condition of your skin and your skin type and then they will customize a facial treatment just for you.

Based on your personalized skin consultation, the specialist will be able to provide you with a cleansing routine which is individualized.  Exfoliation of the skin will help to increase cell turnover and promote even-toned skin.  A well-matched moisturizer will not only make your skin look and feel hydrated, it will also offer protection from the elements.

Facials may include massages which aid with lymphatic drainage.  During a face massage, muscles are warmed and the lymph nodes stimulated to open and enhance circulatory and toxin removal.  This is one of the reasons why a healthy, bright glow is apparent after receiving treatment!  Antioxidants which contain vitamin A and E can help to remove pollutants from the body.

Relaxation is another benefit in receiving spa facials.  Much of our tension is held in our face from our brow bone to our necks, and a massage given during the facial reduces this tension.  The use of the products during the treatment also provides aromatherapy and a soothing calm.

Our specialists at CNY Healing Arts offer facials that alleviate dry skin, oily skin, and combination skin, sensitive skin that will leave your face looking and feeling completely refreshed and refined.  It also offers a great time to ask any questions that you may have concerning your skin care routine such as which types of products to use for your skin type to leave you glowing all year round!

Our staff at CNY Healing Arts Centers would love to assist with a facial treatment just for you!  Please call us or just stop in and give us the opportunity to help you. It would be our pleasure!
