Fast Facts

  • Smooth stones are heated and placed on the skin
  • The stones are used as an extension of the therapists hand
  • A typical Hot Stone massage is 1 hour to 90 minutes
  • Hot Stone massage is great for deep relaxation, anxiety and depression relief, aid in loosening stiff muscles

What is a Hot Stone Massage

A Hot Stone Massage is a type of massage where smooth stones are heated and used as an extension of the massage therapists’ hands to massage. The warmed stones promote deep relaxation and are useful in breaking up dense tissue causing muscle pain. The use of the stones and heat is to warm the muscles causing them to relax. When the muscles are relaxed, the massage therapist is able to apply deeper pressure without causing the client discomfort.

The stones used are typically made of basalt since basalt retains heat. Basalt is a type of volcanic rock. The stones, also referred to as “River Rocks”, are smooth due to the river current. The stones are heated to a temperature between 110 degrees F and 130 degrees F in a professional grade stone heater.  Your massage therapist may choose to either lay stones on certain points of your body or hold them in their hands to aide in relaxation and the kneading process of a typical Swedish massage.

Body points stones may be placed on include:

  • Spine
  • Stomach
  • Chest
  • Face
  • Palms
  • Arch of Foot

The use of the stones as an extension of the therapist’s hands helps with circular movements, tapping, vibrations and kneading techniques.

Depending on your massage therapist, a cold stone may also be used at times during your massage. Cold stones are said to calm and large blood vessels and soothe the skin.

Benefits of Hot Stone

  • Overall relaxation
  • Relaxation of muscles
  • Improved sleep
  • Helps relieve depression and anxiety symptoms

What to expect

During a Hot Stone massage, you can expect the stones to be used throughout the entire massage. If the therapist is not using the stones in their hands to massage, they will place the stones on parts of the body such as down the spine, on the feet, stomach or legs. Depending on each individual’s health history and areas of tension, the therapist will determine where to place stones. The stones will vary in size and weight. Your therapist will test the stone’s heat on themselves first then on you before placing it completely on your skin. Sometime stones will be placed directly on the skin, other times there will be a sheet or towel barrier between you and the stone.   Oils will be used on the body so stones can move easily on the skin. The massage therapist will cup the stones in their hands and glide them along the body in circular motions and along the muscles. A Hot Stone massage can be a Swedish, relaxation massage or the stones can be used to get into deeper muscle groups.

A Hot Stone massage is typically a longer treatment from 1 hour to 90 minutes.

Anyone can benefit from a Hot Stone Massage. If you are someone looking for deep relaxation and love the warmth of a massage bed, this is the treatment for you!

Who shouldn’t get a Hot Stone massage?

Pregnant women should avoid a Hot Stone massage.

If you are a person who does not like a heated massage bed or heat in general, we would recommend a different treatment as you will become warmer during a Hot Stone massage than a regular, custom massage.

Risks and Warnings

  • Since the stones are heated, there is always a chance of getting burned. Your massage therapist will test the temperature of the stones prior to placing it on your skin. If the stone is too hot, let your therapist know immediately to avoid any discomfort.
  • Stones should never be warmed in microwaves, ovens, hot plates, or slow cookers. A Stone warmer, made specifically for heating stone is best to avoid burns.
  • This is not typically a painful treatment. As with any massage, if the work is too deep, causing you discomfort, let the therapist know immediately.
  • It is always best to check with your doctor if you have any medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, varicose veins, decreased pain sensitivity, epilepsy, tumors, or metal implants before receiving a Hot Stone Massage. If you have inflamed skin, sunburns or open wounds, it is best to avoid Hot Stone massage until those are cleared up to avoid irritations.
  • Make sure to be hydrated the day of your massage. Massage releases toxins in the body from breaking up knots and muscles. It is important to have enough water before but also to drink plenty afterward.
  • Like any massage appointment, make sure to disclose all health history details with your massage therapist prior to treatment

What is Reiki

“Reiki is a Japanese form of hands-on healing otherwise known as energy work. The client receives the energy through the practitioner by the laying on of hands. The universal life force energy is channeled through the practitioner, out their hands, into the client. Reiki energy is very intelligent. It goes into your system enhancing/increasing your energy while turning negative energy into positive energy which enhances your spiritual, emotional, and physical wellbeing.” – Heather Anne Cachione, LMT, Reiki Master at out Syracuse CNY Healing Arts

Reiki came to the U.S through Hawaii in the 1940s after being taught to about 2,000 people starting in 1922 by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist. The definition if “Reiki” is, a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patients by means of touch, to advocate the natural processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being. Reiki stems from the words “Rei” meaning Spiritual Wisdom and “Ki” meaning Life Force Energy.

Rei is said to be wisdom from God, the higher self. This meaning that Reiki energy is a powerful energy that can be used on all. It understands each person and how to heal.

Ki is the non-physical energy where if this energy is low, it is more likely to cause illness or make one vulnerable to illness. A high energy makes for health and a positive wellbeing.

Reiki is often referred too as palm healing or hands-on healing due to the nature of how it is performed. Reiki’s natural method od healing is often very meditative and magical fro both the practitioner and the client.

Benefits of Reiki

The same energy used in tai chi is what is involved with Reiki. It is referred to as “Qi” which is pronounced “Chi”. One must tune into the energy if they wish to feel results as it cannot be proven by science.

“The sensation, relaxation and beautiful experience will leave the client with an overwhelming calmness that comes from such a wonderful healing.” -Heather in Syracuse

Reiki is a great from of healing for the emotional state by changing the energy patterns in the body. Reiki practitioners believe that energy can be stagnant in the body where trauma has been inflicted whether physical or emotional areas of the body. Increased flow of energy can help release toxins built up enabling relaxation, decreased pain and symptoms of sickness. Reiki is based on the idea that there is an unseen life force energy that flows through each of us. A low life source energy is what causes our immune system to be down causing illness. When the energy is high, we are more likely to be happy and healthy.

Reiki has also been noted in aide with cancer patients. Reiki helps them to relax. The healing power of touch can cause a soothing response on patients who may be overwhelmed, scared, and stressed. It has also been said to be beneficial when patients are going through chemotherapy.

Benefits include:

  • A sense of calm
  • Relaxation
  • Better Sleep
  • More ease of movement
  • More creativity
  • A sense of being re charged
  • Revitalized

What to expect at a Reiki Session

Reiki is best performed in quiet, peaceful settings. It can be performed sitting in a chair or lying down. Generally being fully clothed is best. Although at CNY In Syracuse and Rochester, we invite clients to change into a robe for extra relaxation. Depending on the setting, soft music may be played in the background. All jewelry, hair ties, glasses, shoes and socks should be removed before your session. As with any massage, it is best to turn your phone on silent to limit any interruptions or distractions.

The Reiki treatment will include little to no touch at all. Hands are held directly over certain points in the body where the practitioner feels stale energy. Hands will be held in these areas for as long or as little as the practitioner sees fit, or as long as they feel the energy flowing. Hands will be in different shapes and held over the head, limbs and torso. The practitioner’s hands may become warm. Once their hands are no longer warm or tingly, this signifies to them there is no longer energy flowing and they move onto the next area. Even after a person leave their treatment, the energy will continue to heal.

It is a personal choice, but some Reiki practitioners will choose to use crystals  or chakra healing tools to help enhance the energy from the treatment.

A sessions length depends on where you have this treatment done. In Syracuse and Rochester, sessions are thirty or sixty minutes long. Your practitioner may recommend additional sessions after your initial visit to continue the healing process with energy work.

There usually won’t be any talking during a session after going over your health history in the beginning of your session. Always let your practitioner know if something feels uncomfortable. Our practitioners in Syracuse and Rochester Healing Arts are trained to customize each clients session specifically to their needs and preferences.

Everyone’s experience with Reiki will be different. Some individuals report feeling different sensations such as body tingles, heat, seeing colors or images or recalling memories. It is in the patient’s best interest to let these feelings happen and not try to push them away. The more you continue with Reiki treatments, the deeper the connections and feelings will get.

Cost

Reiki ranges in cost depending on where you have your treatment done and length of time. Costs typically range from $30-$100 and if often not covered by insurance.

Side Effects

Reiki is not an alternative to medical treatments. It can be used along side treatment to help support healing and positivity.

Some side effects to a Reiki treatment may include:

  • Weakness
  • Headache
  • Stomach discomfort

Side effects are often short lived and not serious.

In order to avoid side effects it is important to disclose all medical history to your practitioner prior to your session.

If you are feeling extreme side effects post treatment, we recommend calling your doctor.

Evidence

Since Reiki is a form of energy healing, there is no hard pressed evidence of its effectiveness. Clients who receive this treatment do confirm the benefits and effectiveness. The popularity of this treatment is increasing.

From a scientific point of view, Reiki produces results on an electromagnetic level. From recent research, it appears that Reiki and other type of energy-work act to electromagnetically ‘jump-start’ the body’s own healing process by producing changes in vibrational frequency that in turn stimulate physical changes in the body.

Stronger Body, Blissful Mind with Acupuncture

Picture this: You’re lying in a quiet, peaceful room; your mind is at ease, and your body is relaxed. This is what acupuncture feels like. While you’re in this blissful state, you’re also helping to defend your body against colds and other illnesses. That’s because acupuncture is a preventative eastern medicine which boosts the immune system.

Typically, October-May is cold and flu season. Feeling run down and stressed out (especially during the busy holiday season) adds to the problem by weakening our immunity. If we have already felt overwhelmed to begin with, this can lead to chronic stress. Acupuncture can help us cope with stress, therefore, helping our bodies stay strong to fight off bacterial and viral invaders.

The acupuncture needles are extremely small, thin, and flexible (they’re roughly the diameter of two hairs or much like the diameter of a cat’s whisker!). Many clients state that they don’t feel anything at all or an ever so slight sensation when the needles are inserted. The trained and experienced acupuncturists at CNY Healing Arts Centers can help you to first feel calm through various needle insertions, and then the body follows in a very relaxed state.

The energy or ‘Qi’ in the body begins to travel more effectively, heart rate is lowered, and breathing tends to slow down as the body becomes relaxed and the energy becomes balanced.

The increased levels of cortisol that we have during times of stress decrease with acupuncture. When this occurs our body does what it’s supposed to do—fight off infections. Acupuncture also helps our immune system by increasing serotonin and endogenous opioid peptide levels which are like the body’s natural pain killers, as well as easing muscle tension. Many people note that they feel increased energy after an acupuncture session.

Massage for Summer Allergies

More than 2/3 of people suffer from year-round allergies.  Summer is here and we’re picnicking in the grass, the beautiful flowers are blooming around us, and we’re spending more time outdoors—it’s all part of fabulous summer!  For those who have allergies, though, it can become a challenge.

As the summer months progress, ragweed or hay fever allergies tend to rise.  The body’s natural defense is to produce excess mucous which often creates nasal congestion and red, itchy eyes which can all lead to fatigue (and frustration)!  Working outdoors with plants and in gardens can expose people to mold spores that are contained on the plants themselves and in the soil.  Mold spores can also increase indoors during the hot, humid months of summer in basements, and on floors and walls in bathroom and kitchen areas.  Even cats and dogs, our ‘fur friends’, are shedding their coats this time of year which can aggravate those with pet dander allergies as well.

Stress and allergies sometimes go hand in hand.  When the body is under stress, it reacts in an exaggerated response to allergens.  The body fights the allergens with coughing, sneezing, wheezing which can put greater stress on the body creating a vicious cycle!  This is because stress increases the adrenal gland’s production of cortisol triggers the sympathetic nervous system to create extra epinephrine and norepinephrine, decreasing the effectiveness of the immune system.

Massage for allergies is a great way to get soothing relief.  Massage can help the body’s reaction to the allergens.  Many of the trigger points for the sinuses are located in the upper back and shoulder which are massaged for relief.  Headaches and congestion can also be relived through this procedure.

CNY Healing Arts Centers provide relaxing massages that can help alleviate your allergy symptoms, as well as to reduce stress and increase your body’s immune system.  For more information, please contact one of our centers nearest you:

Massage for Muscle Recovery

Massage Therapy at CNY Healing Arts Wellness CenterSummer is the time of year when many of us spend a great deal of our time outdoors enjoying our favorite activities.  Gardening, kayaking, biking, running, walking, swimming – they all are fun ways to get outdoors and enjoy the lovely weather, and they are good for us!  However, sometimes enjoying them can be a pain—a pain in the neck, shoulders, legs, etc.!

A massage is a terrific way to work through muscle tension that we may encounter after strenuous exercise and work.  Massage relaxes the body, feels terrific, helps with inflammation, improves blood flow, reduces muscle tightness, and enhances muscle performance.

Many people take medication to ease soreness and eliminate swelling for aching muscles.  The inflammation (an immune reaction) is actually the body’s way of repairing injured cells due to tiny tears in muscle fibers caused during strenuous exercise; therefore, medication can inhibit recovery.  Recent research (published in the 2/1/2012 issue of Science Translational Medicine) shows that massage can aid in reducing inflammation and enhance cell function to actually repair cells unlike medication.

There are many different types of massage techniques, and our massage therapists work with you to meet your needs.  A deep tissue massage focuses on the area in which you are experiencing pain to give you maximum relief.  Adhesions (or bands of sore tissue) are massaged to reduce inflammation, restore proper blood circulation, and create better movement.  Massage also acts as a preventative to enhance your physical activities because it targets those muscles which you use frequently!

In addition to these physical benefits, massage therapy stimulates the nervous system that release endorphins and assist in pain relief.  Massage allows relaxation of mind and tensed-up muscles which provides relief, and can speed up recovery time – allowing you to get back to the activities that you enjoy!

Give CNY Healing Arts Centers a call and let our massage therapists give you the relief you need!

Yoga for Posture

Remember when we were kids, and we were told by parents, teachers, and other adults to “stand up tall” or “sit up straight”? Posture—it make us look taller, more confident, focused and alert (and even thinner)—but there’s a lot more to it than that.

Posture is responsible for the proper alignment of our vital organs and functioning of the nervous system. Poor posture over time creates negative changes in the body. The way that we sit at our desks, stand, and walk all have an effect on our body’s alignment. If we slouch or have bad posture, chronic backaches, neck pain/stiffness, and carpal tunnel symptoms can result over time. Habitual poor posture can even lead to a hunched upper back (known as excessive kyphosis) or a misalignment in the lower back (also referred to as excessive lordosis).

Yoga is an excellent way to improve posture. It also yields other health benefits such as improved circulation and digestion due to the proper alignment of the spine and organs in the body. Taking a yoga class can also help to counteract and heal the effects due to poor posture in the past. This makes yoga the perfect exercise to heal and prevent injuries due to misalignment.

The positions that are practiced in a yoga class help to strengthen the spine. The stretching can help the ligaments and muscles that support the skeletal system. Yoga also builds a stronger core which will also help to support the spine and improve posture. If the core isn’t as strong as it should be, other muscles around it such as the ones in the mid to lower back take over. This puts undue strain on the back. Much of yoga focuses on breath work, which includes sitting up tall and taking in long, deep breaths.

There are many new, exciting yoga classes held at our CNY Healing Arts Centers. Check out our yoga schedule by clicking here!

May is National Allergy Month: Try Acupuncture or Massage for Relief!

Allergy Relief with Acupuncture and Massage - CNY Healing ArtsSpring is here and summer is just around the corner, which means, grass, tree and other pollen are already in the air. As beautiful as this time of year is, for many with allergies it can be a real challenge. The body’s natural defense is to produce excess mucous, which often creates nasal congestion, and red, itchy eyes; these can all lead to fatigue (and frustration).

According to a February 2013 report in the Annals of Internal Medicine, about 20 percent of the population suffers from allergic rhinitis (stuffy or runny nose caused by allergies) and patients that receive acupuncture treatments reported significant improvements in symptoms as well as a decreased need for any allergy medication.

Massage for allergies is also a great way to get soothing relief.  Massage can help the body’s reaction to the allergens by reducing stress and boosting your immune system, among other things.  Facial massage is great for inducing sinus drainage and relieving pressure. Headaches and congestion can also disappear, or lessen in severity, after a massage session.

If you’re looking for some relief this allergy season and would like to try acupuncture or massage (or both), give our CNY Healing Arts practitioners the opportunity to help you. Below is a list or practitioners at each of our locations that would be happy to assist you with relief from your allergy symptoms.

The Healing Art of Reiki

Reiki - CNY Healing Arts CenterReiki is a form of therapy which originated in Japan for the purpose of stress reduction and relaxation.  Reiki is comprised of two words: “Rei” meaning higher power or universal and “Ki” which means life force energy.  This Eastern art relies on hand placement along different areas of the body which help spiritually guide one’s life force as a form of healing.

Reiki is an excellent therapy to use when you’re dealing with life’s challenges or undergoing a difficult time in your life such as infertility, an illness, difficulty with a relationship, or just struggling with emotions.  This radiant healing can bring about peace, harmony and a sense of balance from within.

Health Benefits of Reiki Therapy:

  • Aids the body to release stress and tension
  • Helps the body to heal
  • Reduces insomnia and helps improve sleep patterns
  • Removes toxins
  • Reduces blood pressure
  • Relives pain associated with injuries and chronic issues
  • Helps with energy flow of the endocrine system
  • Boosts immune system
  • Gets you tune into your spirituality
  • Helps you to feel inner tranquility

Reiki differs from massage in that the therapists hands aren’t necessarily on the skin, they can be just slightly above it.

Reiki can help to give you a better outlook on life by diminishing negativity and improving your ability to see positive insights in situations.  It has a positive effect on the chemicals within the brain, and helps to promote healing throughout the entire body.  Each area of the body has its own energy and can become blocked due to emotions and thoughts, Reiki therapy helps to free these blocked areas.

This form of healing can be combined with other modalities such as yoga, meditation, massage, or acupuncture to further heal the body and the mind.  For more information or to schedule a Reiki session, contact the CNY Healing Arts location nearest you:

Yoga: Eastern Influence on Exercise in the West

The east has made a huge impact on our western culture, including our exercise routines and the way in which we approach our health and wellbeing. The benefits of incorporating a holistic mind, body, and spirit approach to our wellness is more mainstream now.

Hindu monks, beginning with Swami Vivekananda, brought yoga to the West in the late 19th century. It was combined with an advanced form of breath work and meditation known as Kundalini Yoga by Yogi Bhajan in 1969. In the 1980s, yoga became popular as a physical form of exercise across the entire Western world.

Many western physicians have begun to view yoga as a lifestyle change, instead of just a form of exercise, due to the positive effects it can have on many areas of our bodies. Many people, when they think of exercise and toning, think of lifting weights or running on a treadmill; however, yoga is a form of exercise that is just as effective at toning muscle and aiding with weight loss. Since it is also a very relaxing experience, the amount of cortisol in the system is decreased, which helps to further aid with weight loss.

Eastern forms of exercise like Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and yoga also increase flexibility and improve balance. There are many poses which include stretching and holding which help to cultivate muscular strength and power. Gaining flexibility and balance helps to decrease injuries to the muscles.

Yoga has been shown to be helpful to:

  • decrease arthritis/inflammation
  • aids with breathing-related issues such as asthma
  • improves circulation throughout the body
  • decreases the risk of hypertension
  • helps to boost immunity

Eastern influenced exercise also heals the mind and can help with:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Mindfulness and living in the present moment
  • Awareness of body through focused breathing and inner reflection

The Healing Art of Cupping

Cupping Therapy is a treatment in which the practitioner creates suction to the skin with a special (usually glass) cup to stimulate the blood circulation and energy flow.  This practice helps with the sore muscles, excess fluids, and pulls toxins from surface tissues.

Cupping is used to treat a wide variety of ailments, including:

  • Indigestion
  • Headaches
  • Hypertension
  • Colds/coughs/congestion due to allergy and asthma
  • Back pain
  • Nervous system/pinched nerves
  • Neck pain
  • Painful menses
  • Arthritis and joint swelling
  • Abdominal pain

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) belief, there are meridians in the body that are responsible for the flow of energy through every part of the body.  When the blood flow becomes stagnant and the energy channels are blocked, disorders or pain can arise.  Cupping is a great way of opening these meridians, and allowing the flow of energy throughout the body.

For the treatment, cups are heated and applied to the skin surface which creates a vacuum with the skin (the strength of which can be controlled and/or adjusted during the treatment) and draws up the toxins.  Once the suction has occurred, the cups can be glided along the body.

Cupping can provide relief to those with lung congestion due to allergies and asthma.  Also after suffering an injuring to an area (such as a bump on the leg), sometimes there can be fluids, stagnant blood which remain and cause blockages and pain.  Cupping can be used to provide relief for such injuries.  The therapy can also help to stimulate the lymphatic system and to detox or clean it out.

Cupping can be used alone or combined with massage or acupuncture treatments.  At CNY Healing Arts Centers, we have practitioners that are trained in the art of cupping, and would be happy to answer any questions that you may have.  Not all services are offered at all locations so call the Center nearest you for more information and let us help you on your healing journey!
