CNY Yoga: Our Team!

Many of you know that Christa Tyson, RYT and PRYT, has just finished up teaching here at CNY. She will be greatly missed, and we wish her the best in her teaching ventures in New Mexico! Life is always changing, and we are currently building our yoga team up to offer you some new experiences with unique and knowledgeable instructors next session. Stay tuned for more details. For now, meet our current group of awesome teachers! We are happy to have Ijlal return to our family to teach weekly classes again 🙂

Meet our current instructors:

Ijlal Lenio, RYT
Since the late 90’s, Ijlal has practiced yoga in many disciplines. It has given her the tools to align physically, mentally and emotionally with her family and life in general. Through all three of Ijlal’s pregnancies, she practiced prenatal yoga and attributes the depth of love and connection she felt for her children to it. It is this connection that Ijlal desires to expose her students to whether they are prenatal or hatha.

Ijlal thanks her teacher Vishali for helping her to transition this internal satisfaction to an external discipline that she can share with her students. She has had the privilege of being a student to Anusara certified instructor Vishali Varga in completion of Anusara Level I & II training, and has participated in numerous workshops including John Friend, Ellen Saltonstall and Sue Elkind. Ijlal is certified in Relax & Renew by Judith Hanson Lasater and has had the fortune of assisting her in restorative teacher training. She has also recently completed Yoga for Scoliosis teacher training with Elise Browning Miller.

When Ijlal is not learning/teaching yoga, she is an active PTSA member and volunteers regularly in her children’s classrooms. She enjoys the peace knitting brings and looks forward to traveling whenever possible.

Debra Lewis, RPYT, RYT
In September 2011, Debra completed her 200-hour Essential Teacher Training with Francois Raoult at Open Sky Yoga here in Rochester. She has been practicing regularly at Open Sky since early 2010, and finds the Iyengar-based hatha yoga style to suit her best. She continues to take continuing education classes at Open Sky. Following her training at Open Sky, Debra completed her 85-hour Yoga Alliance Certified Prenatal/Postnatal Yoga Teacher Training at the Yoga Garden of San Francisco in November 2011. Ten years of practice as a Licensed Massage Therapist adds to Debraʼs yoga instruction and knowledge of the human body. Debra feels that awareness of one’s own body, mind and spirit is the most important goal in yoga and in life, and she looks forward to seeing you on the mat!

Erin McCollough, RYT
Erin has been practicing yoga for over 15 years. While attending Syracuse University, Erin enrolled in a yoga class. That choice has forever changed her life. Since then, she obtained a degree from the Onondaga School of Therapeutic Massage in 2004 and is both a NYS licensed massage therapist as well as a nationally certified massage therapist through the NCBTMB. In addition, Erin completed the Essential Yoga Teacher Training with Francois Raoult in 2004, is a Registered Yoga Teacher through the Yoga Alliance, and has completed both professional training in The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy (ATMAT) and advanced ATMAT for fertility and pregnancy ( Last but not least, Erin is a Reiki practitioner. Her own journey into motherhood is her inspiration for assisting women to obtain optimal fertility and reproductive health.

As a mother of two children, Jessica has discovered that there is no greater tool in life than your very own breath, no greater satisfaction than being able to be patient and calm in challenging situations, and no greater joy than being fully present in each wondrous moment with a child.

As an avid traveler, Jessica believes there is no greater excitement than a different perspective, and as a lover of the great outdoors, no greater serenity than the peace that is felt when all is still and quiet. And this…is yoga!

As an instructor, Jessica is dedicated to teaching this ancient practice with authenticity, creativity, and fun. She believes in teaching students to truly get to know their bodies in an asana. Her training encompassed both classical Ashtanga and Iyengar traditions, and her personal teaching style reflects the two. Correct alignment is always at the forefront of any posture, students are always given modifications, and adequate time is spent in each pose. Jessica personally feels that the breath is the ultimate guide, and therefore encourages students to find their own and try to move with it. By focusing on the body and breath, one can begin to free the mind, the ultimate goal of yoga.

Whether teaching blossoming bellied mamas, or a senior student unable to find the strength to stand, or a young and vibrant athlete, she teaches from the heart and does her best to connect in some way to the hearts of her students. Ultimately, the transformative power of the practice will inspire a deeper sense of self-awareness so that in each moment, both on and off our mats, we can completely enjoy what life has to offer.

Jennifer Zaffuts, RYT – NEW instructor!
Jennifer began practicing in yoga in 2004 to stretch while she was training for a marathon. She was immediately drawn to the way her mind and body felt after her first classes – centered, peaceful, and lengthened. With each subsequent practice, she felt that her yoga journey began to exponentially open physical, emotional, and spiritual doors.

A school counselor, Jennifer was working with two girls on a bullying issue when she realized that the thoughts she was sharing had been delivered to her the day before in a yoga class. The power in which this realization struck her was the catalyst that led her down the path to teach. Jennifer completed her 200-hour vinyasa yoga certification in 2012 at Midtown Athletic Club. She is excited to share how yoga unites our mind and body, how it helps us to slow down and soften, and how it allows us to take a deeper breath.
