The Green Spot

Four ideas to integrate into your daily life, helping you to live healthier and greener!

  1. Did you know that even after turning off your computer, power is continually used for acessories such as scanners and printers? Invest in a BITS Ltd. smart power strip, which stops energy from being wasted. This power strip costs about $32.99, for more information visit
  2. Use cloth napkins for meals instead of disposable napkins. You’ll feel like each meal is 4-star, and you’ll be reducing your waste.
  3. Wash you clothes in cold water instead of warm or hot water. You’ll save energy and cut your electric bill.
  4. If you know you’re going out to dinner, slip a reusable container into your purse for left-overs.

Counseling Available at CNY Healing Arts

Elaine Wolf Steinberg, MA, MSW, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist will be joining the staff at CNY Healing Arts beginning March 3rd.

Elaine has extensive experience helping couples to deal with marital difficulties, infertility, loss and grief. Elaine also specializes in helping individuals and families, treating for depression, anxiety, grief and loss.

Elaine feels that couples specifically dealing with infertility are at higher risk for exposing unresolved issues around fertility, which can provoke marital difficulties. She encourages couples to seek counseling as a pro-active measure. Counseling helps facilitate discussions about how each partner is feeling and how they are dealing with the decisions being made.

Elaine can create custom stress-reducing and wellness enhancing plans for her clients to bring them balance and coping skills. Elaine is truly a mind-body-spirit holistic practitioner and includes Nia (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) in her repertoire. Nia is a type of aerobic fitness which integrates dance, martial arts and healing arts. She is certified in Nia and will begin teaching classes at CNY Healing Arts on Wednesday, March 19th.

Acupuncture May Boost Pregnancy Rates

A recent study by
Eric Manheimer, a researcher at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, has reported that having acupuncture before or after an embryo transfer may increase the chances of conception by up to 65%. Acupuncture is thought to help increase blood flow to the uterus, relax the cervix and dispell stress hormones that could impede implantation of the embryo.

Experts warn, however, that with this type of study where results are pooled there could be a slight inaccuracy in the 65% improvement rate. IVF pregnancy rates average around 35% alone, the experts suggest that adding acupuncture may increase those odds to 45%. The studies are not conclusive at this time, but many results are leaning toward acupuncture being beneficial when trying to conceive.

Specialists in the field of Reproductive Endocrinology are beginning to refer patients to acupuncture in increasing numbers in an attempt to improve their patients’ chances of conception. Many IVF programs including CNY Fertility Center, Boston IVF and the Reporductive Medicine & Fertility Center in Colorado are recommending acupuncture to help patients reduce stress and potentially improve pregnancy rates.
