Infant Massage during "Baby and Me" Yoga
Posted by: cnyha on Feb 18, 2010 in news

Baby Massage, CNY Healing Arts, Rochester, NYIn Baby and Me Yoga at CNY Healing Arts, in Rochester, your baby will get more than an introduction to yoga!   While focusing on yoga postures (asana) and breathwork (pranayama), you will have a chance to learn other tools to help soothe and bond with your little angel.  Classes rotate through infant friendly activities such as massage, sign language, music, finger play and much more.

Since this weeks topic is massage, let’s look at some of the benefits of infant massage:

  • Loving touch from the parent helps to relax and soothe the baby.
  • One-on-one time promotes bonding and enhances your ability to understand your baby’s little body and cues.
  • Aids in the babies digestion and elimination.
  • Improves circulation of blood, lymph and love.
  • Increases body awareness for the baby.
  • Helps baby sleep!
  • Improves babies immune system.
  • Relieves gas and bloating.

While we massage our babies it’s always a good idea to remember your posture and the flow of breath.  Sit tall with the spine instead of hunching over your baby.  Take long deep relaxing breaths.  When a parent is calm and breathing deeply, everyone around them (spouse, friends, and baby!) will feel more relaxed.

Baby and Me Yoga, CNY Healing Arts, Rochester, NYTry this at home:
In Upavistha Konasana (sit on a blanket with your legs wide, spine long and legs active) and with your baby comfortably in front of you on another blanket, hinge forward through the hips and massage your baby while you stretch your legs.  If your back gets tired, sit up straight and take a break.  Try to keep the back long and avoid bending the spine.  The movement into the forward bend should come from the hips, not the back.

Take long deep breaths all the way down to your belly.  Sending loving blessing to your baby while you massage each body part.  Upavistha Konasana calms your brain which will help you send even more vibes of relaxation to your baby!  Have fun and enjoy!
