Smoking Cessation Through Acupuncture

Acupuncture can greatly reduce the cravings associated with smoking. Thin needles are inserted into acupuncture points around the ear. The  effects of the needles quiet the nervous system to the point of not wanting to smoke. In New York State, a governing body known as OASIS “Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services”  offers acupuncture services to individuals suffering from drug addiction. Smoking is considered an addictive substance and can be treated by acupuncture with great success.

Anyone who is considering starting a family must quit smoking. Both direct cigarette smoke and second hand smoke add to infertility. Nicotine causes lower levels of oestrogens, delayed conception, lower sperm counts and increased risk of miscarriage. Treatment plans range between 2-8 weeks.

Nutrition Counseling

CNY Healing Arts is excited to welcome Heather Neely, Registered Dietitian, offering nutritional counseling.

What is a Registered Dietitian (RD)?
A Registered Dietitian is a nutrition professional.  An RD is the most credible source of nutrition information. After the name of nutritionists or dietitians, look for the initials “RD”, which indicate that an individual has completed an accredited program in Nutrition and Dietetics, leading to a baccalaureate degree or a higher academic credential. Once an undergraduate degree is obtained, an individual is able to apply to a 900-hour supervised internship, and then must pass the national exam.

What does a Registered Dietitian do?
RD’s counsel people on a variety of different topics.  An RD can help with any type of menu planning, weight control, diabetes, kidney disease, and food safety.  A registered dietitian can also assist with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, as well as healthy eating for fertility and during pregnancy.  Following childbirth, an RD can teach new mothers how to get enough calories for breastfeeding, while also getting back to pre-pregnancy weight.  An RD is trained to counsel people on heart disease, cancer treatment, pediatric disorders and food allergies.  Basically, a dietitian can address just about any question regarding food, nutrition and health.
Dietitians also help healthy people stay healthy.  Balance, moderation and variety are the keys for success.  An RD can help develop an eating plan that works for any type of lifestyle.

What is expected during a counseling session?
When meeting with a registered dietitian, the first step is to gather lifestyle information, including eating habits, exercise habits, past medical history and medications.  This information will help the dietitian formulate a successful eating plan. Every person is different, so an eating plan that works for one person, may not work with another.  The dietitian will ask about food likes and dislikes, daily schedule and any obstacles that may have been encountered in the past.  The dietitian will help the patient come up with a realistic goal based on individual needs, and answer any questions.  Before a nutrition counseling session is over, a follow up appointment will be made.  People achieve greater success when they have a support system.  For this reason, family members are encouraged to attend sessions as well.

Belly Dancing – Calm, Creativity and More!cnyfc newsletter
By Meagan Scully
The first low thumps of the doumbek (middle eastern drum)begin to form a pulsating heartbeat that begs for responding movement.  Shoulders begin to rise and fall, breathing
mimics the rhythm of the underlying melodies, and thoughts begin to fade under the mounting beat of the drums.  It is in this space that a dancer can respond to music and surroundings without self-consciousness; the dance itself becomes an act of relaxation or meditation.
I was never one who could sit still, quieting my thoughts in
an effort to ease stress and unnecessary worry.
Thirty seconds into a meditation practice and I found my mind wandering to some future endeavor, a pending job interview, the gas station that gouges motorists, what to wear to my friend’s wedding, and the leaky faucet in the kitchen I still had yet to fix.  With a sigh, I’d give up.  When I discovered belly dancing – almost by accident a few years ago – I discovered a world in
which I was able to use movement and music to calm my mind, relieve stress, and improve my mood.  Where sitting still
failed, dancing allowed me to communicate my emotions without judging thoughts; I was able to communicate that which I could not put into words.
Some days I find myself surrounded with negativity and
pessimism, worry and self-doubt, or frustration and resentment.  It is in these spaces that I sometimes begrudgingly begin my belly dance practice. Thirty seconds into my dance practice, unlike with meditation, the negativity melts away under the music and the movements I cannot help but create in response.  A confident strength replaces my sour mood and I find, despite my stubbornness, honest self-expression and a deeper sense of connection with myself and with those I am dancing.  A smile cannot help but escape my once tense lips and I dance as long and as hard as I am able.  Once I am ready to still my movements, I feel a humbling calm that provides me the strength to handle challenges that seemed daunting before.
Even when tired or upset, I always leave dance class feeling
overwhelmed with gratitude.  With a colorful hip scarf or the delicate chime of a coin belt, I feel rewarded to have such a playful and creative way to express my sadness, my joy, my
strength.  I find there is nothing more powerful for improving my mood than sharing a connection with other women through belly dancing.
CNY Healing Arts belly dance classes are held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 6:55. For more information call 315.671.5755 and embrace the energy of belly dance.
