Ear Candling Can Relieve Discomfort from Sinus Pressure

After I had suffered from severe seasonal allergies for about a week, I finally scheduled an appointment for Ear Candling at CNY Healing Arts Center on East Avenue in Rochester, New York. I was lucky enough to observe Meranda Thomas, one of CNY’s Estheticians, perform an Ear Candling demonstration the week before. I made a mental note that I would like to schedule the treatment in the future, but never thought that the time would come so soon for me.
With painful sinus pressure around my ears and a swollen anterior gland, I turned to Meranda for advice. She spoke to me about the benefits of Ear Candling for a person who struggles with allergies, affirming that when the cone-shaped fabric candle is lit, the smoking end, which is carefully inserted into your ear, draws toxins, impurities, and wax out of your ear canal. This can loosen up any blockages that may be causing sinus pressure or discomfort. At that point, I was willing to do anything in my power to relieve the pain I was having, to avoid getting a sinus infection…or worse… an ear infection.
I arrived at my Ear Candling appointment with my hopes high, but was still a bit skeptical about what this treatment had to offer. I hadn’t heard much about it before it became available at CNY. Meranda lit the candle, and explained to me that I might hear a light crackling noise in my ear, but at no point would the treatment be painful or even uncomfortable. She was right. I laid on my side on the treatment bed, and she began the process, inserting the smoky end of the candle slightly into my ear. As the candle diminished in size, Meranda cut the ash from the end that was lit into a small bowl filled with water. She did this until the candle was a few inches long. While performing the treatment, Meranda gently massaged my temples and around my ears with natural lavender essential oils.
When both ears had been candled, Meranda showed me the contents of what was left of the candles. I won’t go into detail, but it’s safe to say that I am glad to be rid of them! I felt instant relief when I sat up, almost like when you clean a pair of dirty glasses and put them back on to see crystal clear.
The next morning, when I woke up, I no longer felt the pressure that haunted my ears for the past week. The swollen gland that used to hurt when I swallowed was no longer inflamed. Ear Candling had solved my allergy crisis.
If you’re interested in learning more about Ear Candling or would like to schedule an appointment at our Rochester CNY Healing Arts Center, please call 585.244.1280 and ask for Meranda Thomas.

Girl’s Night Out at CNY Healing Arts Center in Rochester, NY
March 26, 2010 by Jessie Briel

Women of all ages trickled through the doors of CNY Healing Arts Center in Rochester, NY for Girls Night Out on Tuesday, March 23rd. The ladies exchanged smiles and laughter as they anticipated the relaxing night they were about to spend at the spa. In a span of less than 3 hours, the ladies would experience traditional massage therapy, hot stone foot massages, acupuncture, yoga, aesthetics, and even hula-hooping! First, the guests checked in at the podium. Each one received a personalized name tag that bore the name of a flower, revealing which small group they belonged to for the evenings events. The women mingled over wine and an array of fresh hors d’oeuvres, from pineapple chunks to pesto dip.
Soon, it was time to begin. Each group started at a different station and enjoyed it for 30 minutes before rotating to the next. The group of women donned “Tulips” put on a comfy pair of CNY slippers and headed up to the Yoga studio. Each guest stretched out a yoga mat and let Christa, one of CNY’s Certified Yoga Instructors, lead them through an energizing yoga session.
The “Daisies” started in the Acupuncture Room, where Shelley and Heather, NYS Licensed Acupuncturists, gave an informational session on the benefits of this underrated Eastern therapeutic practice. This was the quietest room of them all. Many women closed their eyes for a moment of silence as they received mini-treatments from Heather and Shelley.
The “Daffodils” tried out some of our new Aveda skincare products with Meranda, an experienced Aesthetician, and the newest member to the CNY staff. Many guests booked facials that very night, eager to indulge their skin with an all-natural Aveda treatment.
The “Hibiscuses” were pleasantly surprised by what awaited them. In what will soon be CNY’s very own Café, this group of feisty chicas hula-hooped their hearts out to the beat of the music. Although this may seem like child’s play, our Hula Hoop Class Instructor, Jen, will tell you different. When the right technique is used, a weighted hula hoop can tone your arms and tighten your tummy, among many other muscles!
Last but not least, the “Hydrangea” girls kicked their feet up and chatted in front of the stone fireplace downstairs, as they waited to be pampered with a hot-stone foot massage or a chair massage. Stress melted away from the guests as Erin, Kristi, Elaine and Jen, CNY’s Licensed Massage Therapists, worked hard to relieve the tension in their muscles.
By the end of the night, each woman had a little taste of the services that CNY Healing Arts has to offer. A bunch even left with complimentary door prizes. Whether they came to Girls Night Out to de-stress from a hard day’s work, or simply because they deserve it, everyone left the spa de-stressed, re-energized, and ready to tackle what the week had in store for them!

Building Energy with Chinese Qi Gong
February 24, 2010 by Shelley Szymko-Carroll

Building Energy with Chinese Qi Gong is taught at our Rochester CNY Healing Arts Center by licensed acupuncturist, Shelley Szymko-Carroll. The class is offered on Thursdays in the yoga room from 4:45 – 5:45 p.m.
Qi Gong (pronounced “chee gong”) is an integrated mind-body method of movement developed in China several thousand years ago. It is the practice of doing gentle movements with focus on the inhalations and exhalations of breath to achieve a state of improved health, relaxation and vitality. The word “Qi” means “energy” and “Gong” represents “skill “or “work.” So, we can think of Qi Gong as “energy work.” Based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Qi Gong is beneficial to maintain good health or to cure disease. Qi Gong, when combined with acupuncture or Chinese herbs, is highly effective in healing very complicated health concerns with this multi-dimensional approach.
The benefits of practicing Qi Gong include:
- increased physical energy
- a more focused and relaxed mind
- improved blood and energy flow to the pelvic region
- increased circulation and warmth
- improved metabolism and improvement in digestion
- relief of pain
- deeper, more restful sleep
Qi Gong may be practiced as a group (in a class setting) which is especially important when starting to practice it, or the movements or postures (a similar term used in yoga) can be done at home independently after initial instruction. Daily practice takes no more than 10 minutes. A major health concern may be addressed by practicing specific therapeutic exercises for an additional 20 to 30 minutes several times per week. Many of the exercises are done while standing, although some are done sitting. Visualization techniques and meditation are also a part of Qi Gong practice.
Health concerns that Qi Gong can address are:
- female and male infertility
- pain , including arthritic pain
- high blood pressure
- headaches
- insomnia
- depression, stress and or anxiety
- cancer (when used in conjunction with modern medicine)
There is a great deal of experiential evidence and clinical research in the United States and abroad that attests to the benefits of Qi Gong. Now may be the time to look at a new method of healing for a particular health concern for which you would like to heal!
