Nutritional Counseling

CNY Healing Arts offers nutritional counseling with a registered dietitian (RD) or with our Acupuncturist offering nutrition through Chinese Medical Theory.
What is a Registered Dietitian (RD)?
A Registered Dietitian is a nutritional professional. An RD is your most credible source of nutrition information. Look for the initials “RD” after your nutritionists/dietitians name. These credentials indicate that an individual has completed an accredited program in Nutrition and Dietetics, leading to a baccalaureate degree or a higher academic credential. Once an undergraduate degree is obtained, that individual is then able to apply to a 900-hour supervised internship. In conclusion, the individual must pass the national exam.
What does a Registered Dietitian do?
RD’s counsel people on a variety of different topics. An RD can help with planning healthy meals for you and your family, weight control, any type of menu planning, diabetes, kidney disease, and food safety. A registered dietitian can help with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, healthy eating for fertility and during pregnancy. Afterwards, an RD can help you get enough calories for breastfeeding, while helping you get back to your pre-pregnancy weight. An RD is trained to counsel people on heart disease, cancer treatment, pediatric disorders and food allergies. The list does not stop there. A dietitian can help you with just about any question you have regarding food, nutrition and health.
Dietitians also help healthy people stay healthy. Balance, moderation and variety are the keys for success. An RD can help you find an eating plan that works for you and your lifestyle.
What to expect during a counseling session.
When meeting with a registered dietitian, you will be asked a few questions on your lifestyle, such as eating habits, exercise habits, past medical history and medications. This information will help the dietitian formulate an eating plan that will be the most successful for you. Every person is different, so an eating plan that works for one person, may not work with another. The dietitian will ask about your food likes and dislikes, daily schedule and any obstacles you may have encountered in the past. Your dietitian will help you come up with a realistic goal based on your individual needs and answer any questions that you may have. Before a nutrition counseling session is over, a follow up appointment will be made. Some people have better success when they have a support system. For this reason, we encourage family members to attend sessions with you.
