Spa Parties, CNY Healing ArtsAs the weekend approaches, I find myself debating over the few trite activities that I always end up doing with family and friends on my time off. In no particular order, the weekend usually revolves around seeing a movie, going out to eat, a night out on the town, or enjoying the weather outside. Spa parties are normally booked within CNY business hours, but can be accommodated if requested outside of these. Experience Massage at CNY Healing Arts Center

massage at CNY Healing ArtsI was in dire need of a massage when I scheduled one with Tom Weber, the newest edition to CNY Healing Arts Center on East Avenue in Rochester, NY. After I talked with him about my “problem muscles,” Weber told me that I was about to embark on a journey that would be different than anything I had experienced thus far. He was right.

Weber is a Licensed Massage Therapist, with over 10 years of experience. Within the first ten minutes of my hour-long massage with Weber, I realized that his approach to body work was different than other LMTs I had seen before. I was so relaxed that I almost dozed off to the rhythmic drums in Byron Metcalf’s music, which synchronized with Tom’s varying massage techniques throughout the treatment. Weber notes that, “Drums have a very powerful de-stressing effect,” which I quickly learned to be true.

He later shared that, “Bodywork functions as a powerful gateway to access and nurture profound states of well-being.” Here he implies that not only does the art of massage therapy serve to heal and ease bodily discomfort and injuries, but its benefits extend beyond our physiology. Weber emphasizes that, “[Massage] can function as a gateway or catalyst to access and nurture states of well being.” He believes that well being is something that cannot be taught.

Many of us go through life thinking that our well being comes from money, material goods, intellect, work, or any of a number of things that are connected with our identities. Weber disagrees. He ponders, “My role is like that of a midwife: I ‘give birth’ to well-being.” He admits that the goal of his bodywork is to aid people in “accessing a deep sensation [or] dimension that has nothing to do with what we think, or who we think we are…a state of well-being precedes that.”

Needless to say, Weber helped me to disconnect from the present, and explore the mystery of–in his words–what it is like to just “be”.

My Manicure and Pedicure at CNY Healing Arts Center

Classic CNY Pedicure at CNY Healing Arts CenterAfter hopping around from salon to salon for the last 4 years of my life, I decided to search for a place that was a true spa to do my nails. I switched to CNY Healing Arts Center on East Avenue in Rochester, shortly after Meranda Thomas began working there as their first full-time esthetician.

CNY Healing Arts in Rochester uses only Aveda products for their facials and other skin treatments, such as body wraps. As far as manicures and pedicures go, they offer a wide selection of OPI Lacquers, as well as Spa Ritual polishes, which are formaldehyde-free.  Meranda uses OPI scrubs along with Aveda Foot and Hand Relief creams for nail care.
I lounged in the Meranda’s brand new nail spa room, floored with mahogany wood and decorated to perfection with tastefully patterned fabrics that were gentle on the eyes and soft to the touch. My Classic CNY Pedicure began with a foot soak, as I relaxed to the calming music and sunk back into the plush love seat.

Amidst the normal clipping, cuticle trimming, foot & nail filing, and buffing, Meranda gave me a foot scrub with a Caribbean scrub. It smelled like a Pina Colada in a bottle! And it left my feet and ankles smooth and soft. After the scrub, Meranda rubbed the Aveda Foot Relief Cream into my feet. It left them glowing with moisture.

Throughout my Classic CNY Pedicure, Meranda offered helpful, personal suggestions for nail care, specific to my skin and nails. For example, she noticed that my nails were slightly dehydrated, and recommended that I use Nail Tek III to hydrate and strengthen them.

After the pedicure was over, Meranda gave me tips to make my pedicure last, such as putting a clear coat on to keep it fresh and to keep it from chipping. By the end, I felt pampered and enlightened. My nail care experience at CNY far exceeded my expectations.

Ear Candling Can Relieve Discomfort from Sinus Pressure

July 1, 2010 by

Ear Candling at CNY Healing Arts Center in RochesterAfter I had suffered from severe seasonal allergies for about a week, I finally scheduled an appointment for Ear Candling at CNY Healing Arts Center on East Avenue in Rochester, New York. I was lucky enough to observe Meranda Thomas, one of CNY’s Estheticians, perform an Ear Candling demonstration the week before. I made a mental note that I would like to schedule the treatment in the future, but never thought that the time would come so soon for me.

With painful sinus pressure around my ears and a swollen anterior gland, I turned to Meranda for advice. She spoke to me about the benefits of Ear Candling for a person who struggles with allergies, affirming that when the cone-shaped fabric candle is lit, the smoking end, which is carefully inserted into your ear, draws toxins, impurities, and wax out of your ear canal. This can loosen up any blockages that may be causing sinus pressure or discomfort. At that point, I was willing to do anything in my power to relieve the pain I was having, to avoid getting a sinus infection…or worse… an ear infection.

I arrived at my Ear Candling appointment with my hopes high, but was still a bit skeptical about what this treatment had to offer. I hadn’t heard much about it before it became available at CNY. Meranda lit the candle, and explained to me that I might hear a light crackling noise in my ear, but at no point would the treatment be painful or even uncomfortable. She was right. I laid on my side on the treatment bed, and she began the process, inserting the smoky end of the candle slightly into my ear. As the candle diminished in size, Meranda cut the ash from the end that was lit into a small bowl filled with water. She did this until the candle was a few inches long. While performing the treatment, Meranda gently massaged my temples and around my ears with natural lavender essential oils.

When both ears had been candled, Meranda showed me the contents of what was left of the candles. I won’t go into detail, but it’s safe to say that I am glad to be rid of them! I felt instant relief when I sat up, almost like when you clean a pair of dirty glasses and put them back on to see crystal clear.

The next morning, when I woke up, I no longer felt the pressure that haunted my ears for the past week. The swollen gland that used to hurt when I swallowed was no longer inflamed. Ear Candling had solved my allergy crisis.

If you’re interested in learning more about Ear Candling or would like to schedule an appointment at our Rochester CNY Healing Arts Center, please call 585.244.1280 and ask for Meranda Thomas.

Benefits of Hula Hooping

June 1, 2010 by

CNY Healing Arts Center, Outside DeckThe staff at CNY Healing Arts Center on East Avenue in Rochester, NY, anticipated the echoing laughter that was about to ensue at Girls Night Out on May 22nd, as women of all ages filed onto the large deck, extending off the back of the building. Jen Moore, CNY’s certified Hoopdance Instructor, kept her intro speech short, as the ladies anxiously waited to get their hands on the vibrant, shiny hula hoops, hand crafted and custom-made by none other than Moore’s husband.

The recent explosion of hula hooping across the nation has baffled many who still think of it as a 50’s pastime. However, after the first five minutes of Moore’s Hoopdance class, any doubt about the benefits of Hoopdance that previously lingered in these women’s minds was completely erased. Not only did the ladies begin to sweat a little from the full-body cardio workout that they experienced, but laughter rang through the air as they giggled together, and at themselves.

The benefits of Hoopdance are far-reaching. Moore taught the ladies different methods of dancing, so that they could work on toning specific areas of their bodies, including the waistline, glutes, arms and thighs. She explained that Hoopdance not only strengthens your core and other muscles, but it increases flexibility. The different positions used in Hoopdance challenge your standard range of motion, expanding it with each session. Hoopdance also enhances cardiovascular health, keeping your heart pumping with constant motion, whether fast-paced or steady and slow. Last but not least, all of the flexing during Hoopdance releases toxins from your body in the same way that yoga does, leaving you feeling refreshed and energized.

On Moore’s personal journey to health and happiness, she has lost over 100 pounds through a combination of Hoopdance and leading a healthy lifestyle. She now teaches Hoopdance classes every Tuesday night from 6PM to 7PM at CNY Healing Arts Center at 2244 East Avenue in Rochester, New York.

Girl’s Night Out at CNY Healing Arts Center in Rochester, NY

Chair Massage at CNY Healing ArtsWomen of all ages trickled through the doors of CNY Healing Arts Center in Rochester, NY for Girls Night Out on Tuesday, March 23rd. The ladies exchanged smiles and laughter as they anticipated the relaxing night they were about to spend at the spa. In a span of less than 3 hours, the ladies would experience traditional massage therapy, hot stone foot massages, acupuncture, yoga, aesthetics, and even hula-hooping!  First, the guests checked in at the podium. Each one received a personalized name tag that bore the name of a flower, revealing which small group they belonged to for the evenings events. The women mingled over wine and an array of fresh hors d’oeuvres, from pineapple chunks to pesto dip.

Soon, it was time to begin. Each group started at a different station and enjoyed it for 30 minutes before rotating to the next. The group of women donned “Tulips” put on a comfy pair of CNY slippers and headed up to the Yoga studio. Each guest stretched out a yoga mat and let Christa, one of CNY’s Certified Yoga Instructors, lead them through an energizing yoga session.

Girl's Night Out, CNY Healing ArtsThe “Daisies” started in the Acupuncture Room, where Shelley and Heather, NYS Licensed Acupuncturists, gave an informational session on the benefits of this underrated Eastern therapeutic practice. This was the quietest room of them all. Many women closed their eyes for a moment of silence as they received mini-treatments from Heather and Shelley.

The “Daffodils” tried out some of our new Aveda skincare products with Meranda, an experienced Aesthetician, and the newest member to the CNY staff. Many guests booked facials that very night, eager to indulge their skin with an all-natural Aveda treatment.

The “Hibiscuses” were pleasantly surprised by what awaited them. In what will soon be CNY’s very own Café, this group of feisty chicas hula-hooped their hearts out to the beat of the music. Although this may seem like child’s play, our Hula Hoop Class Instructor, Jen, will tell you different. When the right technique is used, a weighted hula hoop can tone your arms and tighten your tummy, among many other muscles!

CNY Healing Arts Center, Rochester, NYLast but not least, the “Hydrangea” girls kicked their feet up and chatted in front of the stone fireplace downstairs, as they waited to be pampered with a hot-stone foot massage or a chair massage. Stress melted away from the guests as Erin, Kristi, Elaine and Jen, CNY’s Licensed Massage Therapists, worked hard to relieve the tension in their muscles.
By the end of the night, each woman had a little taste of the services that CNY Healing Arts has to offer. A bunch even left with complimentary door prizes. Whether they came to Girls Night Out to de-stress from a hard day’s work, or simply because they deserve it, everyone left the spa de-stressed, re-energized, and ready to tackle what the week had in store for them!
