Sunscreen vs Sunblock

Spring is finally upon us and summer will be just around the corner, at CNY Healing Arts in Latham NY, we want your skin to be prepared! The sun’s rays are more powerful then ever and its time to start protecting your skin from damage that can be caused by over exposure to the sun. As you are preparing for outside get togethers, walks in the park and days by the lake, attention must be paid to you and your family’s skin health. Now the big question: Sunscreen VS Sunblock? Is there a difference? Does it really matter? Truth be told, it does matter depending on what you’re looking for. Let’s break it down.
Sunscreen is the more commonly used of the two sun protection lotions. An easy way to remember what sunscreen does is to use the word “screen” from it. Sunscreen, just like a screen on a window or door, filters; letting some things in but keeping most things out. Therefore sunscreen allows some UV rays to reach your skin but deflects most. The SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, determines the amount of UV rays that reach your skin. The higher the SPF rating, the less UV rays reach your skin while the lower the SPF the more UV rays will reach your skin. Since sunscreen acts as a screen letting only some UV to reach the skin, a sunscreen lotion will allow some tanning of the skin while helping to prevent the skin from sunburn. Sunscreen lotions are less visible on the skin then sunblocks and most will protect against UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate our skin more deeply than UVB rays and have been known to contribute to skin aging, wrinkles and skin cancer. UVB rays affect our outer most layers of skin, causing reddening and sunburn we have after too many hours in the sun. Sunscreen must be applied every few hours because the ingredients in the lotion break down after extended exposure to sunlight. Please remember also to reapply sunscreen after going in the water or after excessive perspiration!
Sunblock is not as widely used as sunscreen mostly because of its thick opaque white consistency. Sunblock literally acts as a “block” for the sun’s UV rays, composed mostly of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Because of the thick texture of sunblock, most people do not use it all over their body. Infants and young children should always have this sun protection lotion applied to them since their skin is more sensitive than adults and will burn easier. People with more sensitive skin who tend to burn or freckle very easily should also use sunblock rather than sunscreen.
There is no clear winner over the battle between Sunscreen vs Sunblock. If you desire sun protection but would like to get tan during those nice summer days, sunscreen is your best bet. For those with children and sensitive skin, go with a sunblock for total protection from the sun’s harmful rays. With either one you choose, just be sure the bottle says “broad spectrum”, “multi spectrum” or “UVA and UVB protection”. Also the SPF rating should be 15 or above. This way you are getting the most out of your sun lotions, while protecting you and your family from all the damaging rays of the sun. Sunscreen and sunblock should be used on a daily basis regardless of the weather to help protect your skin from UV damage. After shopping for the proper sun protection, take a trip to CNY Healing Arts in Latham NY for more skin care advice and a personalized tour of our amazing spa!

Holistic Treatment of PCOS
Two of the biggest barriers to fertility are high stress levels and an unhealthy diet. This is especially true for those women who have been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, or PCOS.
Although the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, women with PCOS tend to have sustained, abnormally high activity of the sympathetic nervous system and tend to be insulin resistant. At CNY Healing Arts, we offer acupuncture, massage, herbs and supplements that when combined with lifestyle changes such as relaxation practices, a healthy diet and regular exercise help to regulate both sympathetic nervous system activities and blood sugar levels.
The sympathetic nervous system has many functions but is best known as being responsible for our stress response, our “fight or flight” mode, where blood flow is diverted to skeletal muscles and lungs to allow for quick response to a perceived threat. With this, blood flow is shifted away from other systems deemed unnecessary at the time, including our digestive, reproductive and immune systems. Also, the rush of adrenaline from the adrenal glands signals the body to release glucose into the bloodstream to allow for a quick supply of energy. The sympathetic nervous system, once activated, is slow to deactivate and return control of bodily systems to the parasympathetic system which operates under the familiar adage, “rest and digest.” In women with PCOS, chronically high blood levels of stress hormones cause imbalances of reproductive system hormones, or sex hormones, where excessive androgens are produced, most often cited is testosterone, and production of LH and FSH is stunted such that the ovaries do not produce mature eggs appropriately and multiple cysts result. The presence of these cysts leads to a failure of the release of mature follicles from the ovaries, or anovulation. With a lack of ovulation comes amenorrhea, or a failure to menstruate. Additionally, the constant presence of high levels of glucose in the bloodstream leads to insulin resistance as the cells’ receptors to insulin become desensitized as more and more insulin is released from the pancreas in an attempt to lower blood sugar levels by ushering glucose into cells for storage.
Infertility is common in women with PCOS due to a lack of ovulation, irregular menstrual cycles, and insulin resistance that often leads to weight gain. A Swedish study published in 2009 found that acupuncture reduced the stress response brought about by chronically triggered sympathetic nervous system activity and allowed the body to more easily remain in a state of relaxation. Reducing the chronic stress response leads to lower blood sugar levels and decreases insulin resistance which often allows for weight loss.
PCOS, in Chinese medicine, is often seen as a pattern that includes Kidney deficiency with blood and qi stagnation and excessive dampness. Those with a Kidney deficiency may experience fatigue and low back and/or knee pain. Qi and blood stagnation can be caused by stress and can lead to irregular menstruation and irritability. Excessive dampness is indicated by the presence of cysts and increased body weight. The herbal formula Feminine Care 2, carried at all CNY Healing Arts centers, treats this presentation and can be an important part of a treatment plan for correcting the imbalances seen with PCOS. Additionally, supplements such as zinc and Chasteberry (Vitex agnus-castus) can help to regulate reproductive hormone levels and encourage ovulation.
A holistic approach to the treatment of PCOS and its resultant infertility may include several therapies. At CNY Healing Arts, we offer many different services allowing you the tools to create a customized plan perfect for your particular healing and wellness needs. Acupuncture, massage, herbs and supplements can help to de-stress and regulate menstrual cycles. Nutritional counseling can help to outline a low-glycemic diet plan that will allow for more balanced blood sugar levels. Yoga classes offer the dual benefits of exercise and relaxation. And, support groups and counseling offer tools to deal with the emotional stressors involved in the struggle of infertility.
If you would like to learn more about the holistic approach to treating PCOS at CNY Healing Arts, please do not hesitate to call or set up a consult with one of our practitioners. And, as always, please speak with a trained herbalist before beginning any herbal or supplement regimen to avoid side effects and potential interactions with fertility medications.

Is There More Continued…. Garden of the Mind
May 21, 2010 by Stacey DiCerbo

In this next edition of, Is There More?… we will be focusing on the Garden of the Mind.
Do you have loss of faith or hope? Do you feel your mind focuses on the negative? Do you feel nothing good happens to you? Mary Qualters, owner of the Chakra Garden for Mind and Body Healing recently joined the Circle Of Hope Support Group in the Latham office for an evening of Spring Cleaning—Getting rid of the negativity. Mary started the evening asking the group, how many times have they heard, “I understand” when it comes to discussing infertility with family and friends. Mary understands. She herself had a fertility journey which she shared with all of us. Mary guided us through her journey and while she did not ever achieve a child, she created a garden of hope, a center for healing. Mary’s garden became her child. Mary welcomes clients to her garden and is fulfilled by their achievements and success. Mary shared the garden of the mind. We need to keep well that garden and weed out all the negative energy. We are to have no weeds in our gardens. Mary led us on a pathway of vibrations. She encourages us to vibrate in a happy place.
The most important goal in our lives is to feel good. We want to achieve the highest vibration possible. The goal and the highest vibration in our group that evening would be to achieve having a baby. The lowest vibration would be depression and despair. Even anger is a higher vibration than depression. With anger, we feel an emotion, and that is better than feeling nothing at all. Mary highly encourages the group to keep your eye on the target. Don’t focus on how you will achieve it, just know that you will. One of the participants in the group questioned Mary, “How do you go on after a negative outcome?” Mary likened the situation to when you hurt your toe. Allow the hurt to happen and then when your toe is not throbbing in pain, you can start again. You can achieve a higher vibration when the pain has dissipated. Another participant asked, “How can you move on when you feel like you’ve done something wrong in not achieving a pregnancy?” Mary tells us Do Not analyze what you’ve done “wrong.” It’s not your job. No one is at fault. Take this burden off your shoulders and keep an eye on what you want. Act as if you already have achieved your goals. Expect a good outcome.
And a good outcome it shall be.

Buying Organic Fruits and Vegetables
May 18, 2010 by Heather Neely
To many people, grocery shopping is a chore they would rather not do. Not only is it time consuming, but it can really give you a headache, too. Low fat, low sodium, sugar-free, high fiber, all-natural, organic – these are some of the buzz words we see and hear when shopping. To help make your shopping a little less stressful, let’s take a look at the organic foods.
People choose to eat or not eat organic for many reasons. Eating organic is not cheap and luckily, it is not always necessary. The most common reason to include more organic foods is to reduce your family’s exposure to pesticides and chemicals. It’s very common to see organic fruits and vegetables along side non-organic varieties. How do you know which ones you should spend the extra money on? Here are some of the top produce picks to buy organic:
Apples Pears
Celery Peppers
Cherries Potatoes
Grapes Raspberries
Nectarines Spinach
Peaches Strawberries
With these fruits and vegetables, it’s very difficult to wash off all of the pesticides and chemicals. Take strawberries, for instance. There are hundreds of little crevices on the berry where the chemicals can seep into. As a rule of thumb, if you are going to eat the whole food (meaning you are not going to peel it), then definitely buy organic.
Hopefully these tips will help you to shop smart and eat smart. For more information about including organic foods in your diet, make an appointment with a Registered Dietitian. I work out of the Syracuse area CNY Healing Arts. Not only do we provide nutritional counseling, but yoga, massage, acupuncture and skin care (among other things). We provide a whole body experience!

The 8-Limbs of Yoga
May 11, 2010 by Christa Tyson
Locals have been spreading the word about the yoga classes at CNY Healing Arts in Rochester. What makes these classes different from classes at other studios? There is more to yoga than moving your body around in bendy positions and chanting “Om”. The word yoga translates to “union, or yoking together” and is thought to bring the mind, body and soul together into peace and bliss. The best place to start your journey is to attend group classes at CNY Healing Arts in Rochester. You will learn the proper way to move through poses (or asana) ways to deepen your breath (pranayama) and you will also hear about the other 6-limbs associated with a yoga practice.
The Eight Limbs of yoga are a series of steps which purify the body and mind, ultimately leading the yogi to enlightenment. These eight steps act as guidelines on how to live a meaningful and purposeful life. They serve as a prescription for moral and ethical conduct and self-discipline; they direct attention toward one’s health; and they help us to acknowledge the spiritual aspects of our nature.
- Yamas – guidelines for how we act with the outer world, external restraints ▪ Ahimsa – non-violence toward yourself or others ▪ Satya – truthfulness ▪ Brahmacharya – moderation ▪ Asteya – non-stealing ▪ Aparigraha -non-covetousness
- Niyamas – internal guidelines ▪ Saucha – internal and external cleanliness, purity. ▪ Santosha – contentment ▪ Tapas – austerity ▪ Swadhyaya – study of the sacred texts ▪ Ishwara Pranidhana – living with an awareness of the divine
- Asanas – Postures
- Pranayama – regulation or control of the breath.
- Pratyahara – withdrawal of the senses in order to still the mind.
- Dharana – concentration.
- Dhyana – meditation
- Samadhi – the superconscious state. In Samadhi non-duality or oneness is experienced.
