Ear Candling at CNY Healing Arts in Rochester, NY

March 30, 2010 by admin

Ear CandleI am so happy to introduce Ear Candling to CNY Healing Arts in Rochester. For those who are wondering what this is, it would be my pleasure to elaborate. Ear Candling dates back 2,500 years to the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Tibetan, and American Indian cultures. Today it is being practiced all over the world. This ancient tradition is a  safe, simple, natural way to remove excess wax and debris from inside the ears. Long tapered candles are inserted gently into the ears then lit. The candles are never forced into the ear they just sit on the outside of the ear canal, and you are fully covered the entire time. The candle creates a slight vacuum  effect, oxidizing, vaporizing and drawing softened wax and debris from the ears into the surface of the candle. This is a very relaxing, gentle, non invasive and safe process.

This treatment does not hurt. Most people experience a gentle warmth which has a very soothing relaxing effect. There is a slight crackling sound as the candle burns. It kind of reminds me of a campfire, and most people love a soothing campfire. The whole process takes about a 1/2 hour to 45 min. We will use peppermint, eucalyptus, or lavender oil to gently massage the head, face, and sinus’s. You will love this!

Most reported benefits have been, relief of pressure in the ears and sinus’s. Improved hearing, safe removal of excess wax and debris, helps balance and equilibrium including vertigo, helps eliminate ringing and itching inside the ears, fewer ear aches and infection, this also helps to fight infection while keeping toxins down in the ears. The clean feeling itself makes worth coming. I have been doing candling on myself, my clients, and my 11 year old son for the past 5 years. This is safe for the whole family.

The only people who should not receive this treatment are those who have had recent ear surgery, cysts in the ears, mastoiditis in it’s acute phase, ear drains (current), recent injury to the ears or ear drums, artificial ear drums and tumors of the ear.

Ear Candling is one of my most popular, and relaxing services. This is also a service with instant results. Once you feel what it’s like to have clean and healthy ears you will be hooked! I hope I have answered any questions you may have had about Ear Candling. Call CNY Healing Arts today to book your candling appointment at our Rochester location.

Hope to see you soon!

Girl’s Night Out at CNY Healing Arts Center in Rochester, NY

March 26, 2010 by Jessie Briel

Chair Massage at CNY Healing ArtsWomen of all ages trickled through the doors of CNY Healing Arts Center in Rochester, NY for Girls Night Out on Tuesday, March 23rd. The ladies exchanged smiles and laughter as they anticipated the relaxing night they were about to spend at the spa. In a span of less than 3 hours, the ladies would experience traditional massage therapy, hot stone foot massages, acupuncture, yoga, aesthetics, and even hula-hooping!  First, the guests checked in at the podium. Each one received a personalized name tag that bore the name of a flower, revealing which small group they belonged to for the evenings events. The women mingled over wine and an array of fresh hors d’oeuvres, from pineapple chunks to pesto dip.

Soon, it was time to begin. Each group started at a different station and enjoyed it for 30 minutes before rotating to the next. The group of women donned “Tulips” put on a comfy pair of CNY slippers and headed up to the Yoga studio. Each guest stretched out a yoga mat and let Christa, one of CNY’s Certified Yoga Instructors, lead them through an energizing yoga session.

Girl's Night Out, CNY Healing ArtsThe “Daisies” started in the Acupuncture Room, where Shelley and Heather, NYS Licensed Acupuncturists, gave an informational session on the benefits of this underrated Eastern therapeutic practice. This was the quietest room of them all. Many women closed their eyes for a moment of silence as they received mini-treatments from Heather and Shelley.

The “Daffodils” tried out some of our new Aveda skincare products with Meranda, an experienced Aesthetician, and the newest member to the CNY staff. Many guests booked facials that very night, eager to indulge their skin with an all-natural Aveda treatment.

The “Hibiscuses” were pleasantly surprised by what awaited them. In what will soon be CNY’s very own Café, this group of feisty chicas hula-hooped their hearts out to the beat of the music. Although this may seem like child’s play, our Hula Hoop Class Instructor, Jen, will tell you different. When the right technique is used, a weighted hula hoop can tone your arms and tighten your tummy, among many other muscles!

CNY Healing Arts Center, Rochester, NYLast but not least, the “Hydrangea” girls kicked their feet up and chatted in front of the stone fireplace downstairs, as they waited to be pampered with a hot-stone foot massage or a chair massage. Stress melted away from the guests as Erin, Kristi, Elaine and Jen, CNY’s Licensed Massage Therapists, worked hard to relieve the tension in their muscles.
By the end of the night, each woman had a little taste of the services that CNY Healing Arts has to offer. A bunch even left with complimentary door prizes. Whether they came to Girls Night Out to de-stress from a hard day’s work, or simply because they deserve it, everyone left the spa de-stressed, re-energized, and ready to tackle what the week had in store for them!

Cruciferous Vegetables and Fertility

March 25, 2010 by Heather Neely

Nutrition for Fertility. CNY Healing ArtsIs there anything I can eat to help me get pregnant?”  I hear this question all the time. It would be great if the answer was a simple yes or no, instead I must answer with “possibly”.  While there is no magic food that you can eat which will guarantee getting pregnant, there is a way of eating that can increase your chances.   This is when meeting with a Registered Dietitian can be greatly beneficial.  I work out of CNY Healing Arts Center in Syracuse NY and 95% of my clients are looking for fertility-food answers.

The best diet to help you get pregnant is one that contains a variety of foods.  That means not avoiding any specific food groups, eating the right amount of calories, limiting trans-fats and saturated fats, increasing vegetable proteins and whole grains.  And that’s just to name a few of the healthy steps towards a fertility friendly diet.  The overall diet is what you need to be concerned with, which is the way you eat day after day after day.  One specific food is not going to be the key to getting pregnant.  However, certain foods can help…

Did you know that eating cruciferous vegetables can help with your estrogen-progesterone ratio?  Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and cabbage.  These vegetables stimulate the body to use estrogen more effectively.  Estrogen is important for preparing the uterus to house the fertilized egg each month.  Cruciferous vegetables also are known for helping to prevent diseases, such as cancer.  So what does this mean for getting pregnant?  Make sure you include these veggies in your diet.  It doesn’t have to be everyday in mass amounts, just make sure that most days of the week, you have a serving (1/2 cup) of these powerful vegetables.
There are many pieces to a fertility friendly diet.  Not only are you eating to increase your chances of pregnancy, but also to create an adequate store of vitamins and minerals for when you do become pregnant.  The best way to make sure you are on track with your diet is to meet with a Registered Dietitian.  Feel free to email me or call CNY Healing Arts to see if this is an option that may work for you.  Now, go enjoy a nice big bowl of broccoli!

If you would like more information, please join me for my free Nutrition for Fertility Workshop on Saturday, April 17th, 1-2:30pm in the Yoga Studio at CNY Healing Arts, Syracuse, NY. RSVP to 315.671.5755.

The Balance of Yin and Yang

March 23, 2010 by admin

Balance of Yin and YangThe theory of yin and yang is one of the most important and fundamental concepts of acupuncture and oriental medicine. The philosophy of yin and yang is as old as Asian history itself. Yet, it is one of the most misunderstood and difficult ideas to get a grasp of.  While I have been practicing Chinese medicine for over 10 years in NYC and here in the Syracuse area at CNY Healing Arts, it is the question I encounter most. Patients are often curious about how the theory of yin and yang relates to their health and what they can do to help themselves.

Most of us are raised with the concept of duality seeing the positive and negative aspects of life, as it is a basic education to make us a responsible member of society and for ourselves. We are taught to defeat the evil and often rewarded for being good. The concept, however, does not apply to the theory of yin and yang.

The concept of positive and negative does not correlate directly to yin and yang. Neither does the concept of good and evil. It is this misunderstanding that causes the confusion among patients whom were misguided.  The concept of yin and yang not only describes the opposite elements or phenomenon, it also includes the model of support and harmony. Yin and yang teaches us the idea of relativity as the stability of matter can only be achieved by maintaining the balance. There will be chaos and eventually death and destruction if this balance breaks or one of the elements of yin and yang gets extremely strong.

Our health depends on the same concept of maintaining the balance. We should not only look for ways to improve on deficiencies, but also find ways to reduce excesses. We also should be aware that this concept applies to our spiritual and emotional state as well. We should understand that the extreme state of our emotion harms the state of our well being. We can overcome this by realizing there is an opposite force in existence, not only in the future or in our imagination but occurring simultaneously as well. By practicing visualizations of this philosophy, we will be more at ease.

There is a universal attraction which holds these opposing but interdependent and inter-supporting elements together. I would like to call this universal bonding agent, love.

Do You Have Trouble Falling Asleep?

March 17, 2010 by Samantha Mullen

RelaxationAs a Massage Therapist, I often hear from people that they have difficulty falling asleep. An interrupted sleep pattern can be cause for many other discomforts and have a negative effect on our immune system. Receiving a massage on a regular basis will benefit you in many ways, including regulating your sleep patterns. “A regular basis” for massage varies from person to person. Once a month is an ideal regiment for most people to receive a full body massage, however someone with specific or serious discomforts may find that more often would be more beneficial.

There are several things you can do between your massage appointments to improve your sleep. Controlling your breathing and educating your muscles will help your body get ready for sleep each night.

Controlled breathing is a fantastic way to relax. While you are lying in bed, breathe deeply through your nose into your abdomen. Be sure that your abdomen rises with each inhale, try not to breathe through your chest. Fully and slowly exhale each time. We should relax our muscles as we breathe out. Begin with concentrating on releasing your jaw and the muscles in your face as you exhale. Next, relax your neck and then your upper back. Work your way down your body, exhaling through and relaxing each group of muscles, all the way to your toes.

Another great way to remind your muscles how to “let go“, is to tighten and release them. Begin with flexing your toes and feet and then relaxing them. Follow with your calves and work all the way up to your head. Tighten and release your arms, hands and even your face. Continue with your controlled breathing as you go. Work your way back down to your toes and repeat as many times as you like. You may soon find your way off to a wonderful, relaxed sleep!
